From transplant. That's unless you direct seed them. I start mine in Dec so I have bigger transplants but then I can plant mine out much earlier than you apparently can.

FWIW, I planted Candycane for the first time this year. A friend in R.I. wanted to try them and bought four bunches of plants and sent me two. I found them relatively trouble free, good size and flavor, but weren't good keepers. My buddy had the same opinion. We both lost about 1/3 of the harvested crop. Oh, I'm in southern Ohio. Answering the obvious, we've both been growing garlic, shallots, and "keeper" onions for a lot of years. Will grow again, but not for keeping.

Candy isn’t noted as a good keeper but it is very popular. You can eat them like an apple if soil is kept low in sulfur.

I belive you could begin harvesting nice size onions at 100 days (day length is influence to bulbing). The problem is that any bulbing onion usually requires the entire growing season unless you are growing them in a high tunnel.

The PA Vegetable Growers Association has partnered with Penn State in promoting this variety as “Pennsylvania Simply Sweet Onion”. To market it as such requires a few rules, one which is to grow them on black plastic mulch using driptape to irrigate. They seem to perform better using that setup. Although with many crops plastic mulch will provide earlier harvest it is doubtful that onions will be influenced the same way.

igtung, when I start large varieties like Ailsa Craig I start the seed in Dec. and transplant into the greenhouse in Feb or March. I would assume that other varieties need to be started from seed in a similar time frame. I do grow Candy Apple from Dixondale Farms each year from starts and I usually plant them from mid-march to april 1st depending on weather.
