My dining room is storm on the upper walls and white on the bottom: I love it. Gray makes wood tones look rich and the color will go well with your seat covers and the adjacent rooms. and

I would change the bottom to match the trim to create a wainscoting look and create contrast with the new, top color. I would go with something more rich than grey, though I love grey, just can't put my finger on what... I'll look for some colors ;)

Thank you eagledzines! Yes; when you walk into the foyer from the front door, to the left is the dining room (kitchen entrance off DR), to the right is the living room. Here are the pictures: foyer, living room, dining room and entrance from dining room into the kitchen. I'm not sure about the gray yazfletch and houssaon?

The foyer and kitchen are more natural colors and the living room upholstery and dining room are jewel tones. Which type of color are you more comfortable with?

I would consider a grayish green one shade darker than the entry.

If there is lots of natural light in the dining room, follow Carolyn A-KD's color choice, but if it is a dark room with little natural light, go with a lighter shade from the entry paint chip.

I think the jewel tones go nice with the formal rooms eagledziness. Carolyn Albert-Kincl would the grayish green be above and below the chair rail? or one dark and one lighter? The side chairs have a grayish green in them also.

The entry color above the chair rail and the darker below. But hey, do sample boards first please!

I would carry the kitchen color into the dining room. Maybe go a shade lighter, but by extending the same color family it will add size to both rooms and brighten the dining room up, and bring your woods tones alive.

I would suggest a grass cloth wallpaper above the chair rail in the colors that Carolyn suggested, as in the first picture, to give the room some warm texture. You could use moldings and crown around the ceiling and add a jewel tone on the ceiling. The moldings could be as elaborate as n the first picture, if your ceilings are high enough, or the molding could be much simpler as in the second picture and painted inside the ceiling molding. The wainscoting on the bottom half would be a nice texture touch as well.
Moleskin upholstery seats on the chairs would also give it some warmth.
You could also bring in the jewel tones with art.

My ceilings in the house are all 8'. I have 8" crown moldings in the LR, foyer & DR. It face South so gets plenty of hot Texas sun. (I keep the blinds closed during the summer). The wall under the chair rail is textured with a knock down texture. The top is, of course, smooth because of having wallpaper. Eagledzine, thanks for posting the pictures. I'll look into the Moleskin upholstery.The first picture of the grayish green would be a different look. The second picture would have all the colors of my family room, LR & powder bath. Pfaffp, I put the lighter color of the kitchen paint in the powder bath. The kitchen and family room are open to one another so they are the same paint color. Then my accessories are burgundy, gold, green, & teal. Carolyn, could I use a flat paint (under chair rail) and semi-gloss(above chair rail) of the same color on the walls? You can use the same color above and below the chair rail, but I would make them the same paint finish. In fact, because you say each has a different texture, I would talk to your painter about getting someone to smooth out the area below to match the area above the chair rail.

I have taken wallpaper off in the past and had the painter spray the knock down texture on the smooth half. In Texas, all the walls in the homes have the knock down texture from the builders. Thank you Carolyn. You have great ideas.

Especially after seeing your living room furniture, I like the idea of a soft robin's egg blue or some sort of light blue with a hint of green in it. You would probably have to sacrifice the fabric on your accent chairs, though, or move them to another room. I like colors that are complementary to the wood finish and since your wood has a lot of red in it, a soft cool color would be a great backdrop. I think the right soft blue a bit on the warm side could work with your other existing paint colors.

I just walked into the dining room and had an idea. What if I paint the bottom half gray like the gray in the wallpaper? I think it would brighten up the room until I can do a total overhaul with new drapes, and an area rug? Any thoughts?

I think I missed something, vjs12. What wallpaper? I thought you were removing the wallpaper and painting the walls. My suggestion of painting the dining room a shade different from the entry was to eliminate adding a whole new color family to your public areas. You have Whole Wheat in the kitchen, your room is yellow and the foyer a grayish green. If you want to brighten the dining room, I would go with a lighter shade of one of the colors you have in adjacent rooms.

Carolyn, no you didn't miss anything. I am taking off the wallpaper, but just threw that idea out there. My LR hasn't been painted in 18 years either so I can repaint that also. I like the grayish green in the foyer and it goes up the stairs and into the hallway.(I recently painted it.) So the LR & DR I can paint to flow better and put accessories in the jewel tone. On that note, what colors can you suggest for the LR? And for the DR I'll take your suggestion of the grayish green on the top and a shade darker on the bottom (I like it)! Thanks

A very light colour (off white) paint with a hint of yellow(light cream colour) The room looks very dark so you need as much light as possible, specially when furniture is dark as well.

Since the living room color will be living next to the entry and the kitchen colors, I need to know what is the name and brand of the gray green in the entry. I know your kitchen is Basket Beige.

Looking at this room that has a lot of blue in it, as does your living room, I like the looks of those white walls.

Carolyn suggestion of the darker color on the bottom is right on target. A darker color on the bottom adds weight to your room, while a lighter color adds height and gives a larger feel to the room. I find it always helps to have rooms flow easily together, which gives the illusion of a more open space. Your side chairs are great! I would build from those as for as my colors go, for walls, windows and rug eventually!
