No Imagination - help

Help, my partner and I are trying to plan a garage conversion which will create a nice kitchen diner plus utility room but I am unable to picture or imagine any plans / designs / interior design. I’m the artistic equivalent of someone who is tone-deaf, being asked to imagine how something looks is impossible.

I watch many of the design programmes on TV to try and get inspiration but I just end up in tears at the fact that everyone seems to know what they want and it all works out perfectly.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get round this issue as, at the moment, I’m so worried we’ll end spending a lot of money on something that will look wrong because of this.

Hi,
There are concept planners/designers who can create a 3d plan of their design that you can virtually walk through on your computer and it will give you a good idea of what it will look like. Karen from OnePlan, you can find her in the pro section - look for OnePlan, did one for our kitchen design and it was fab to see how it would look. Surprisingly affordable too and well worth that little bit of extra spend when you’re spending so much on an extension.

Also, do spend some time making moodboards. Cut out pictures from magazines. And/or go through the photo section here on Houzz, save photos of rooms that you like in ideabooks, make notes of why you like them... it will all help you to form a good idea of what you are looking for in the end result.

All of the property make over programmes have professional designers to give the final wow factor. Have you considered working with one?

I'd definitely consider hiring a concept planner - they can provide you various layout options and ideas with 3D mock ups so you can visualise the space.

In the meantime, maybe you could post s floor plan with dimensions so others can share their take on your project.

Find a designer. You will save money by planning the space and design correctly at the beginning and by using their contacts. You can then implement yourselves. Just get the planning stage right. I promise you you won't regret it. Whereabouts are you?

Definitely get a planner. I had a 2 storey extension built and unfortunately came across Houzz once the plans were finalised and the build was underway. I now know the layout of my house could have been much better had I had advice from a planner. A mistake I won't make again!

Stop watching those shows, start working with a good designer, start browsing pictures and sorting them into groups according to how much you like them, start breathing deeper and start drinking a lot more coffee
