You could paint the chairs, but before I did that I'd change out the lighting. The quality of light from that fixture could make a diamond look bad.

Get some art with color and a light fixture that actually works for a chandeleir and nice big bowl of fruit.

I agree that the builder's boob light fixture needs to be replaced. I prefer lighting that throws the light to the ceiling. IMO, when it shines down it washes out the color of the food and casts ugly nose and hair shadows on diner's faces. Do paint the chairs, but prep is key!

I think painted chairs could be fun, but I'd definitely trade out for colorful art, and consider a table cloth or runner that brings in more color.

Paint doesn't have to chip if it's done properly...
