New living room seating - now what?

Just received our beautiful new love seat and upholstered chairs for our living room. This room is right off of the front entrance to the house and I need help now pulling it all together with accent pieces, art and even more furniture. I want this room to be bright and welcoming, yet polished. All suggestions welcome on artwork, rugs, coffee table, side tables, curtains, lamps, mantel decor and more!

I thought I posted earlier but it's not here so I messed up somehow! argh Check out overstock.com for a table - http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Zila-Round-Glass-Cocktail-Table/8033783/product.html

The finish of your table will help to set the formality of the room, I think. polished silver = more formal. black metal = more casual. You would also likely repeat the finish elsewhere in the room. With the muted colors of the rug you selected & your furniture, I would vote for polished silver. But you have to love it! I like your style & love those floors!

I've never been known to be shy, but I have been know to be a good designer so I need to ask a few questions. This room looks to be about 19 x 14 or so. That is a good size room. Will anyone ever sit in this room..I mean will you ever use it and if so what for, because right now it will only sit 4 small people sitting in the middle of this large room...is that OK...is that what you expected? I mean, that is OK if that is what you really want. And a glass coffee table is for a room that is very SMALL so it would not be taking up all the space of a small room, because glass just goes away.

leelee is right...you need a nice art piece for the mantel! This is just my latest piece...it isnt even listed yet..but something that ties in the blues and earth tones....I have over 3000 pieces to consider. If you need expert advice and help with the art, I am delighted to work with you! Great space!

A statement piece like this "Richielle" from Formento & Formento might also work with the blue themed furniture. I have 1 available 60inches long and 40 inches high. Plenty other options here at http://www.yellowkorner.com/

am thinking an ottoman instead of a coffee table now, to increase seating and heavy pieces in the room.. it seems empty, as the pieces feel smaller for this room size..

Have you thought of trying the love seat on the entry door side of the fireplace where your two chairs were? and the two chairs where the love seat was initially (please don't angle the chairs), so that they frame the doorway which is on the wall behind? this way you can place a console behind the love seat, nearer to the entry door, with table lamps on either end on console or one of the large white decor items on your bookcase.. Next, you can place a bench where the book rack is currently, i-e across from the console, and hang a painting hanging above the bench or a vertical mirror.. Next shift the book rack to the largest stretch of wall which is empty right now across from fireplace.. This arrangement will balance your room length.
Please do try this arrangement if possible...
You also require light drapes for the windows..

Thank you for all of the amazing suggestions! See revised pics attached with our rug from West Elm. We LOVE the rug and think it works perfectly with the room. Couldn't have done it without you. Since the loveseat is slightly small, we're thinking about one small end table on each side, maybe like these - what do you think? https://www.onekingslane.com/index.php/product/20681/1144400 Other ideas welcome, but we def. need something to balance the empty sides of the loveseat now that the rug really defines the space.

aimran - Thanks for the diagram, but I really love the arm chairs flanking the fireplace now that we have lived with that arrangement for a few days. I would, however, love recommendations on what else to do around the room, in the corners. For example, when you walk in the front door, I'd like to do some welcoming entryway arrangement like you described on the right - mirror, skinny table with two lamps like this - what do you think? http://www.housebeautiful.com/decorating/home-makeovers/silverleaf-sideboard#slide-2

All - while I like the art recommendations, we're really looking for something personal and meaningful for above the mantel. So I think we're going to need some time to hunt for that - maybe a landscape that pulls in the colors of the room from a meaningful place....

Let's go back to drapes - anyone have any stores/vendors they LOVE for drapes? Would love to find a light blue/green that matches the loveseat...
Just found this - could these work for the end tables?? https://www.jossandmain.com/Carried-Away-Thompson-End-Table~EHQ2682~E5187.html

You need to pull the furniture away from the fireplace a little more--at least by a foot. And I'm sorry, but your rug looks lost in the space. An 8 X 10 rug would be better. If more of the furniture ends up on the rug, that will be OK.

likes stamps design a large circular mirror above fire place round coffee table and a beautiful rug which touches all corners of furniture Ive seen pictures of large glass vases turned upside down as extra end tables

agree with NANCY on the rug size & pulling furniture slightly away from fp. BTW the rug design & colour is too subtle..
So that means you want light/neutral/silverish shades in the room?

like the joss&main end tables. but they are of light design.. you need heavy to serve your purpose.. no doubt, onekingslane are heavier looking one's....

I like @airman's furniture arrangement better than what you have now. Try it and see if it works.

If you're looking for artwork, check out my work to see if it matches your style. I have many originals, and hundreds of configurations of canvas prints that I can print to your wall size.

@ the homebeautiful link you posted. that can work if it is not so wide... as the door swings towards that door.. and i will damage the piece behind it if the piece is wide... Will you keep the current rack against the wall opposite fp? IF interested you can try and see how it will look there.. otherwise that homebeautiful link will work on this wall better..

@ SHORT WALL: In that diagram i posted, i showed a vertical mirror/vertical, large painting with bench below it...
OR you could keep such items against that wall: https://www.jossandmain.com/Coast-to-Coast-Farrell-Chest~CTCI2224~E4965.html OR https://www.jossandmain.com/Coast-to-Coast-Serena-Chest-in-Silver~CTCI1598~E4965.html OR https://www.jossandmain.com/Summer-Fresh-Copenhagen-Console~WN1908~E5019.html OR https://www.jossandmain.com/Summer-Fresh-Morris-Hall-Console~WN1906~E5019.html

@ WINDOW WALL: you could keep the joss&main items that i suggested above underneath the two windows or maybe plain shelves etc...

The entry table, mirror and lamps you posted look beautiful! Not sure exactly how much space you have on that wall so just be sure that whatever piece you decide leaves you enough room to clear it when you make the turn to the stairs or doorway. Maybe a demilune shape would work best. Nothing worse than hitting your hip on a pointed piece of furniture every time you pass it.
Agree with the comment that the chairs need to be pulled away a little more from the fireplace. It's looking great!

I don't have a problem with the rug size, because I think you will keep adding pieces to the room. Artwork will add more colors and before you know it, you will have evolved a room that is all your own rather than from a show room. That's what makes it your home! As for drapes, Country Curtains is a good catalog source. Also, check out Pottery Barn, West Elm, and Ballard for ideas - then visit JC Penny to price compare. Are you close to a decision re: coffee table?
Nice choices. For every seating position you need light and a place to set a book or drink. You need a table between the two side chairs with either a table lamp or a floor lamp. Floor lap and table/table lamp on the other side also. Pick a large rug with grey/blue to anchor the conversation area.

LN, she's already purchased a rug she is happy with & moved the chairs.

    Hi all!

We are ordering a larger rug (6 x 9) - we totally agree that even this slight amount of room will be more helpful. Also, we switched the arrangement and really like the loveseat on the left and chairs on the right! Thank you! Here is a pic of the new arrangement AND the rug pulled away a foot to show you where the new size will extend to.

Since the chairs are swivel chairs, do you think they should be straight on to the loveseat or angled toward each other slightly?

We went looking for coffee tables and behind-the-sofa tables today, but didn't find anything we love.

Will continue to update once the rug comes in/we find additional pieces!
Looks much better already, more "elbow room."
Oh, it doesn't really matter much with swivel chairs whether they are straight on or angled slightly, 'cause eventually, they will find their own "resting place."
I think the larger rug is a great choice. It will make the room look more complete. By the way I love your choice of rug.

Agree with Nancy Reese on productive & decisive.
Nancy, love the look mirror lends above the fireplace! where is it from? is it joss&main? Also, love the round table & the complete look that curtains give, which means no need fo rfurniture below windows..

laconn, great that you have found the look that you like! let us know when you will get the rug. we will look for curtains then for your room..

@ angled or straight on swivel chair: you can alternate between the two settings for a change with time to time.

This may sound like a dumb question, but how is a coffee table best used? It seems like it's usually too far away from the seating to be comfortably used for a drink, etc. Sorry to hijack your thread, laconn.

Love the rug. If that is me, I would add a small round coffee table at the center, and what about a little coffee stand between the two single chairs? For artwork, a picture of nature might bring out live to the room, but I leave it to your personal choice.

aimran - I don't know where the mirror is from. It does look like something Joss & Main would sell. When I photoshop rooms, I search google images to find furnishings. I select items to generate ideas, rather than provide shopping resources.
@ Nancy Reese: that is an intelligent way to try different options. Thanks for your response! :)

Thank you, all! What fabulous advice that you continue to give on this blog - I love Houzz! I am in a holding pattern for the time being, with lots of weekend travel and zero time to shop. But don't worry - I will definitely post a pic once I have more pieces! Rug comes in July 9 (backordered, ugh) but I am so grateful for all of your help!!!

Hello all - Wanted to give you an update now that we have received many of the new pieces for our room. I hope you like what you see! We also found an incredible round accent table to coordinate with our coffee table. For those wondering, Ethan Allen is the best - great service and beautiful furniture - found the coffee table there after an exhaustive search for MONTHS! Hope to find art in 2 wks in Charleston. Lamps TBD. Let me know what you think!

love it! love the coffee table, classy piece. have you tried those white urns on the mantle?
I love this room but I have two preferences- I have to have a light to read by whether it is from spot lighting above or a nearby floor lamp, and I need a side or coffee table next to every seat because I don't like having to hold a drink in my hand for very long. I like the candles inside the fireplace and agree some of those white urns would look great on the mantle. I love the colors you've chosen- soothing and sophisticated. Have you found a piece of art that pulls them all together over the fireplace? I also love that you are finding the right thing for the right place and not throwing together things you already have just to fill up the space.
Just popping in for an update - we have ART! Love this piece above the mantel. Bought it in Charleston and got it custom framed to coordinate with the metallic finish of the accent tables. Hope you like!
Any ideas for floor lamps? I am in desperate need of more light in this room. Also, would love thoughts on styling for the coffee table!
The artwork is very beautiful. Good job.
I cannot believe how PERFECT that art is above the mantle! Very nice choice with that.
Looks great. What about a vase on that table, it is begging for something to be on it! Maybe bring the blue and a bit of green with a table arrangement?
What about a glass chandelier. This would add a bit of sparkle and would tie the glass table in with the room more.
A fire screen could be a good idea also - or you could stack your wood in your fire while unused like the pic in this link:

A white ceramic vase would look stunning on that mantel. Love your wooden floors, they convey a certain warmth to the room- well done :)

You could add a couple medium sized books and a small vase with flowers with or without a tray under them, or you could go with a bowl/platter with decorative spheres or seasonal items like pinecones. Ypu might also want to add a couple of small items to the mantel, like a decorative clock and a vase or perhaps a large seashell to compliment the painting....
I like spheres in plate idea for coffee table. Light and dark blues.. With metallic..

I am sorry but I have forgotten whether we discussed curtains/drapes.. Will you be getting them? shouldn't you get them first?
