To cover the dark paint, prime with light gray primer, then with white primer. It's much easier to choose a new white once the purple is not casting reflections on your samples. The ceiling will need repainting, too. Take a new floorboard with you to the paint store to save time in picking out samples.

If you have white painted trim already in the house somewhere, start with that color for sampling. It will give you a more unified look if you carry the same white trim throughout.
