narrow down to what you want to feel under your feet first, and function

a cozy shag or sheepskin? wool? cotton? natural weave? is it high traffic, low traffic area? will you be okay with spilling things there or will drive you crazy? maybe inside outside rug will work better or maybe should be acrylic? or smth resilient like a cowhide (they make them fake too..and in different colors..and not all are shaped as cowhide)?

then narrow down the style. Do you like traditional, and if yes what tradition?:) more tribal? more flowery pattern? Do you like borders or more fluid design? Or maybe different geometry like shown above?

Or maybe you like modern styles. Abstracts? Something whimsy?

Or maybe you want something understated and natural with just a bit of a color?

Or you want it be all one color? If yes should it be fluffy or flat, muted or more flamboyant?

Think of what you want to feel in your room and how it needs to function given your everyday living. Don't get stuck on exact color you have to choose..start with a bigger picture.

And look at lots of inspiration..not only rooms but art, photographs, movies, nature around, city next to you, you name it. Colors that are "yours" are all hiding in there. One or several will make you look longer, and come back to it again and again. Then you'll know it's your color, your pallette.
