Help needed for kitchen layout!

We moved into this house a few months ago and are trying to figure out how to best redo the kitchen. We still want seating in the kitchen but do not need a separate table since the dining room is right next to the kitchen too. Our current thought is a large island with seating at one end (see picture), and while the dimensions are a little tight, it seems doable for us. Our budget isn't big but we are capable of doing the work ourselves, so moving gas, water, electrical aren't out of the question. It's just a matter of how much time we want to spend on this project. Please let me know your thoughts or if there is some other layout that would be better. Thank you!

Given 1.5" overhang on the countertop for the island, it looks like Kim's walkway dimensions are accurate. A couple of points that need attention - figuring out how the island countertop is to be supported at the seating area, and whether the refrigerator location is the best, given that small space. The basement stairway does make for a serious challenge.

Standard cabinets are 24"D. I would use that for your island and increase the walkways to 39" and 42" on the south side.

Otherwise I think you have the best possible layout with using a kitchen island in your space.

A neighbor recently did a new kitchen in a 1970's home and was told her doorway between dining room and kitchen needed to be wider to meet new codes. I am considering making my doorway between kitchen and dining room bigger because we eat in the dining room and keep getting in each others way going through the doorway - carrying food and dishes. My fridge is also next to the doorway and adds to the congestion.

You could do a 33" fridge then an 18" drawer between sink and sliding door. I have a 33" fridge and we are a family of 6 and manage fine. Then you can enlarge the doorway between the dining and kitchen if needed. Fridge, sink, range makes for a good functioning layout as long as there is adequate space between each.

With all the storage you will have, you could decrease uppers by the sink and put in a bigger window if that is in the budget.

I wondered Fred. She did not change her plan - the doorway was already being widened, but admittedly, it is hard to get a new appliance through these doorways. It is also possible that I misunderstood. I will ask her about it when I see her:) I am glad to know there is no code related to kitchen doorways - though my most recent fridge had to have the doors removed to get it in the kitchen.

It is certainly a good idea to make sure everything will fit through the doo or aisle :) It seems that contractors and KDs tend to like to lump life lessons in with codes when talking to homeowners. They figure if they call it a code, the conversation will be short, instead of having to explain the reasoning, and take the time to look up all the appliance dimensions. The attitude of just tell everybody it has to be 3' so their job is easier and doesn't require thinking, ranks right up there with the do as I say, not as I do attitude with me.
