From what I gather, it depends on the size of the roots. For example, lettuce with a shallow root might be better in a pipe where tomato with a big deep root might be better in a bucket. How you supply either them becomes more related to the physical construct which would have been chosen because of plant type.

It all depends on the plants you intend on growing and the environment your able to create, within the available space. Most plants can be grown with a hydroponic system, Just make sure your supplying your plants with the proper light spectrum. Regular hydroponics with a film of water and nutrients flowing across the roots will be the cheapest and most efficient method for growing for yield. If you have the room and money, aquaponics is just replacing your nutrient solution with a fish tank. With aquaponics you can cut the cost of nutrients as the bacteria from the fish will produce enough nitrate and nutrients for the plants, while at the same time, the plants are filtering the water for the fish. Nature working together at its best!
