kitchen decision coming soon, Help!!

Hello everyone. I have to decide what cabinets I am ordering in the next couple of days. I am having a very difficult time deciding which finishes to choose. The cabinets will be Kraftmaid Gentry (basic shaker). They will meet the ceiling with crown. Which whitei s best with my floor and current trim? The left side is Dove White and right is Canvas. I also need to choose either a Cherry peppercorn island or painted onyx. What combination looks best? Is Dove White too bright? I don't want the cabinets to look yellow either, but a soft white is what I am going for. The floors are as pictured. If you have Dove White or Canvas kitchen, please send me a picture. Thank you!!

And I should say, the walls will not be painted as pictured. I plan to tile to the ceiling around the window and stove hood. The tile will be something neutral, light and classic. I am sure I will need help with that when the time comes.

No factory finished cabinet is going to exactly match your existing trim. Your trim can be painted TO match a cabinet white. Dove has a cooler/grayer undertone, (hence the name) and canvas is warmer. If the rest of your home is very warm toned colors, you have your answer it appears, and it isn't DOVE. Don't plan on any cool white/ gray marbled tone counter with Canvas. Island can be whatever you like. And it can also match perimeter.

The trim in kitchen need NOT exactly match trim elsewhere.......as long as it blends, and you have a logical place to switch trim color..

No image will be exactly your kitchen.......your lighting, your trim. Simply google. Dove white below......... or google same with canvas

Jan, Thank you for your quick response and advice, My home is mostly cool colors (blue/gray) and I have lots of white trim. I do all of my own painting ( you can probably tell because I haven't filled all of the nail holes in my trim) so I am not afraid to work my way around the house with a new trim color, but I do want the white cabinets to work with the gray family and was hoping to find a counter that could go warm or cool so that I was not locked into the gray trend forever. The kitchen is part of a great room that could all be painted and not interfere with trim color in the rest of the house. I just don't want the kitchen to look yellow, but my husband is not sold on Dove white.

The one on left is cooler and will go better with cooler neutrals in room.

The one on right is slightly warmer & will go more towards beige neutrals in room.

Jan is correct, different factory finishes = different trim colors.

I am feeling some pressure to purchase before the holiday because of some promos ending, but will not rush a decision. Any thoughts on post-christmas pricing? Past trends? I am purchasing from Lowes.

Dove honey. Don't touch that canvas. Tell DH he has to get past it. Or you shall whine forever. You don't do a kitchen because the cabinets are on sale. ...........

No mass produced cabinet line sold in a big box is going to give you the options a semi custom line will provide. No kitchen need be hurried and if resources are limited, that's that. But a rush is never wise. You will have the kitchen "forever" , and any sale is meaningless over five years, even two years. Absolutely. Meaningless.

You can even save your way to better cabinets and more options. : ) Pressure is self inflicted.

I will be working to sell the Dove, I love white! Budget-wise, custom will never be an option with 6 more years of kids in college looming ahead. Plus, Hubby has completed the demo! He is really good at that.

What do you think about adding cabinet detail to the sides of the cabinets? As I understand, they can be upgraded to that or you can order the sides as flush and add a cabinet door now or later.

I can’t agree more . Take your time to do this right and if you have cool tones go Dove for sure . There are some nice quartzs that let you have a bit of choice to go cool or warm since they combine both and that would also keep the space from being too white.

My just finished kitchen with White Dove laminate, 3000K LED lights, wall paint color matched to the laminate and BM Simply White ceiling paint (Ceiling paint normally has grey undertones. Simply White is very white with a slight yellow undertone).

Since every lighting and paint choice effects how White Dove, or any color, looks, I thought I'd detail what surrounds it. (I'm including the second photo, with the 2700K under cabinet LEDs on, to show you how significant color temperature is. The LEDs are being replaced with 3000K)

Orec3, last year lowes had a big cabinet sale last February/March. I saved over $3000 from that sale. Not sure if they'll do it again in that time frame.

The renovation market is incredibly hot as we speak. Not saying 3k isn't a chunk of change, but mistakes in hurry hurry are far more costly.

We suggest getting a quote from a local cabinet company.

We beat big box stores & average of 30% - 45% with no sale.

That might save you more $ & take the time pressure off, so

you can take the needed time to plan it right the 1st time.

We don't suggest ever rushing kitchen decisions.

Ihutch13, yes I thought I remembered a big discount in February at most home stores. Are you happy with your choices?

Jan, good advice on the drawers. I am changing some lower cabinets to drawers. The salesperson mentioned that some people purchase their own crown and paint it. I am not afraid to paint most anything, but think it would be wise to just order the crown with the cabinets.

Just offering a budget friendly possibility J & K Cabinetry. They sell to builders and may not be everywhere, but I have been very impressed with their white cabinets (the stained ones are a bit uneven). I am finishing a major remodel and have custom cabinetry in my kitchen but put the J & K white in my laundry room. I was feeling rather cheap about skimping on the laundry room until I went into a $899K open house and saw they had used J & K cabinets in the entire kitchen.

I would never call white dove a true white. It’s very creamy, definitely an off-white, and almost yellowish in many pictures. I think it’s more of a warm white than a cool one. If you prefer cool, and already have cool colors, I would make darn sure I brought home a sample of the white dove and looked at it in the room before painting.

I like the brighter white w/the onyx. looks best w/your floors. hate the yellow look.

you can always repaint your trim. and when you do, get some of the white wood filler for the holes. when dry, give it a fine sanding to level it off w/the molding. now paint. I do this to all of my baseboards and trim work. you can't even tell where any of the nails are.

Chess, White dove by BM is definitely creamy. The Kraftmaid paint, Dove White is a cooler white.

Jan, I have two 15 inch drawers on both sides of my range. Are they too shallow for the shaker trim? Would slab drawers look better?
It looks like cabinets will be dove white on the perimeter and onyx for the island. Any granite or quartz suggestions? I also need pendants for the island. I would appreciate any help from the Houzz experts. Thank you!

Fifteen is width, Height is probably six on top drawer of drawer base. On the TOP drawer, yes....too shallow for the Shaker detail. Those below it are probably fine.

Orec3. Sorry I just saw this post and you asked me a question. Yes, I am happy with my cabinet purchases from lowes. 10 years ago, I did a smaller remodel and purchased the Shenandoah line, because the doors were solid wood and at the price point I was looking for. Those cabinets held up very well, and we decided to do a larger kitchen remodel last summer and was very happy to see that after 10 years, that line was still carried, and we ordered more to match. We ordered crown because painting afterwards is dumb in my opinion. My cabinet person at lowes did tell me to not order a garbage bin cabinet because we'd save over $100 if we just ordered the cabinet and a rev a shelf kit and did it ourselves.

The white on the left looks clean; the white on the right looks aged to yellow. if you're painting your island base cabinet, it need not be black/white as, it appears, the rest of your kitchen -- you can paint it your favorite color and can go bold with it if you wish. Painting the island base cabinet your favorite color and using a different countertop on it can work really well.

Lhutch13, I had planned to add my own garbage insert if I decide I need it later. I have never had garbage in a cabinet and am not sure if I want the dirtiness it brings to my new cabinets. glad that worked out well for you and you are happy with your cabinet choice.

I was told to use the same crown from same manufacturer same finish instead of painting crown to match, because different paints will match in beginning but over the years may age different. Example, Some paints yellow more than others. Very hard to match a factory painted finish.

The garbage insert was the best decision I made and is irreplaceable. It's in my island where I do food prep. I just open the cabinet and slide things off the counter and into the garbage.
All good advice. I never really thought about how a paint color changes over time, I will order the crown with the cabinets. I am also rethinking the garbage, it sounds handy to have it built in the island where prep occurs. Thank you!
