Managing Vigorous Roots

i’m growing wax jambu in containers and run into the problem that their roots grow too vigorously.

how do people deal with root systems that grow very quickly? which of the following are good ideas:

1. switch from 5-1-1 to 3-1-1 or 50/50’pbf/spm

2. root prune and repot 3-4 times/summer

3. keep the canopy very compact

context:

last winter i potting from 3g nursery pot to 10g 5-1-1 (max size container i can easily move. they can’t survive the winters here) and half way through summer the soil became matted, hydrophobic from drying out too much, and also root bound.

mid sunmer i root pruned (took a saw and quartered the root ball. also loosened the soil) and up potted to a 15g fabric pot. by winter the soil was matted with encircling roots.
