Thank you everyone! This is our first house & we have been flipping the whole thing so we can only do so much more right now without changing too much or spending a ton of money. I plan to switch this room around in a couple years but for now the wall paint color, the blinds, the couches are set. I just need to figure out how to bring them together with different pieces and where to place things on the walls etc. Just such a different set up in this room so I have trouble figuring it all out.
I don't think the pictures really show the room very well but it does all look beautiful in there together in person...just too boring right now!
I added a couple other pictures...but these were at night last night so it's really dark in the room.
PLEASE ignore the big light in the corner...it's just there for light til we figure out the rest of the room decor & same with the black shelving & the glass table against the wall. (and the random extra rug in the corner)
Our first thing is figuring out what tables to put in this room. What style & what color would work best & then in addition to the coffee table & side table....should we put a console table against the wall on the other side? or what else could go there?

(as you can see..our blinds look totally different at night...during the day the sun shines through and they look really light but at night they look a lot darker. ) And to the question above, yes we LOVE our windows open! I will add a picture of that too but the only one i have is a picture of the room with the windows open while we were working on it so ignore that mess!

This room has potential to be a knockout! I will play with it later when I have more time, but in the meantime, nikki, don't despair. It's going to be great.

It looks like you have some fabric samples on the the arms of the loveseat. Could you give us a closeup of those?

Also, do you plan to have a television here? Is there a fireplace? How do you plan to use the room? Entertaining and conversation? Reading and zoning out?

Groveraxle - Thank you so much! We had so much to do at once that we just rushed making decisions without really thinking how things would go together. Those aren't samples on the couch just magazines that are out of place :( I love the simple modern look but I went way too simple and now I need to make sure I pull things together somehow. I can't figure out what style or color tables I should do & then wall decor, lamps, etc to go along with it all.
I'm thinking it will be more of a conversation room. My husband would LOVE a tv in here but I just don't see a good place for a tv that would look good still..do you?
There's no fireplace in the room..I wish! and we need to figure out lighting bc the ceiling is slanted so we cant' put a ceiling light in ....we do get a ton of light all day from those windows which we can open them the bottom or just pull them down from the top for some light to come in but still have the privacy.

I would move your furniture in more. You might need a bigger rug, maybe one with design. Your furniture should be a few inches on the rug, try at least eight to 10 inches.

Start by picking a couple of large canvas pieces for your walls, a table for in front of your sofa, and pillows that draw colors from your art. If your art is very colorful, you can stick with the plain rug and add color with a fun table in front of your sofa.

Your basic colors on the walls and furniture are great. You could use some large lamps and tables on the sides of your sofa,and a low table or bench where your table is now. Keep your accessories limited, large, and maybe some shine or mirrored objects would add interest to your room.

If you decide to paint the walls, you might want to pick your art first.

You need a larrrrrrrrrrrrge area rug. your room has the potential to have this warm and fun atmosphere. i'm feeling the slanted ceiling!!!!!! everything is going to have be large. the wall art and the rug. don't forget your drapes. ottoman in the center. a book collection is also good for this. plants are a must. or go to michaels and purchase those flowers that look real. they have a variety .but before any of this be sure to know what 3 colors you would like to use for this entire room. and go from there.

Thinkwhite & jlove5893. Thank you! We brought home a larger rug just to compare the sizes but there was something so off about it...it just looked too big & it looked messy. Is there something we are missing? Maybe we didn't place it well but we put it under the couch. I'm not sure if it just looked bad because we didn't have a table on there or anything?

Sometimes we just need to keep going, and then when done we can take away what starts to put it over the top. I think a big ottoman would be fun in your space. There are some with great designs, or maybe a leather one that won't distract from your other choices. As far as your rug, maybe you will have to try a few before you are happy. I would caution against a rug until you pick your art, unless you have decided on a plain rug. You need some color, texture, and shine in your room. Canvas art, pillows, ottoman, accent pillows for your sofa (get big ones) and you are set for the first trip shopping!!

Try Greatbigcanvas.com. I just found one I think would look good in your space. It's called Trust the Flow, 1132581, 36 x 72, or whatever size would fit best. I couldn't copy it over, sorry. You might have to change your wall color. I'd wait and see once your art is decided.

nikki, I've worked a bit on your room, if only to show you the potential. I added classic linen drapes, a larger rug with a bit of pattern, an arc lamp, and some random art. (It's really random because I found it for someone else and it's not at all what I would choose for your room. Still it gives you a flavor.) I also floated your furniture away from the walls.

I want to stress to you that there is no crisis here and you shouldn't go out and buy a bunch of stuff just to fill the room. Take time to settle in and see how things work. Sit in the room and chill, and what you need and want will appear in your head as if by magic.

I've hung new art, added a coffee table, and opened the blinds. If you find piece you like, post their links and I'll try to put them in your room so you can see how they look.

Groveraxle - Thank you so much!!! Your designs are amazing! I was showing my husband the other night and he said the same thing. He loves the lamp you chose!! I have a question about the wall art/[pictures. I'm all about pictures with meaning & such in our house. We don't have a ton of room for pictures so i try to make the most use out of the room we have. Is it tacky to put up a picture or two behind the couch that are personal pictures? I was actually thinking of taking one of the pictures we took on our honeymoon or one of our vacations of the beautiful views and putting on the wall there so it has a little memory to it :) We have some gorgeous views from St. Lucia, new york, and so on. It wouldnt be a picture with us in it...just a scenic view!

nikki, somehow I missed your question about the personal photos, but Lyvonne answered it well. I will go one step further: you can take your favorite photos, enhance them in Photoshop (or find a tech savvy friend to do it) by cropping, adjusting color, turning them black and white or sepia, then have them printed in large format. There are lots of options for that. Your local office supply store can print on different kinds of paper and then you could mount them (cheaper than framing). Or go to one of many online sites (art.com is one), print them on canvas, and they'll arrive ready to hang. It's a very affordable way to get great personal art in the room.

Thanks, nikki and Lyvonne. It's fun for me to put different looks together and see what happens. Sometimes I surprise myself with some off-the-wall idea that actually works. Besides, I've seen too many people rush out to buy something they think they need NOW and end up discarding it in a year or two because it was never quite right. If I can help people make better choices, or just convince them to slow down, it's all good.

Carolyn beat me to it. I was going to suggest the Noguchi coffee table. It's expensive, but it is a timeless design icon that will be an inheritance piece. You can get it with black stained wood.

I love the last design groversaxle made! I was thinking you could even use the sofa table behind your couch and use it to display books, vases, candles, magazines...etc. maybe even a table lamp? I think having the sofa table behind the couch adds more dimension.

Hadn't thought of the Noguchi table, maybe because it's so pricey, but it does look great.

I am looking at a table we really like but I'm afraid it might be too big. Do you think we need a smaller table for this room or could we get away with a larger round coffee table? It's very simple just a chrome/glass one but I have a certain idea for the rest of the room so I needed a simple design for the table but the only one I have found that I love is round (i originally wanted oval) and to give you the idea it's 40" width.

I know it's simple but I have ideas to bring out colors & designs in other items throughout the room! Thoughts?

Pull sofa out from wall 2 ft put one by window dirty across from other one float in room no furn against walls. Put a area rug in center get 8 x10 no sofas on rug. Get rug in a print not tan or brown. A color try teal as a accent color. Use in pillows and window covers. Add panels floor to ceiling in a teal. Keep shades up. Add a 36" glass coffee table with silver or black metal. Add a tray to table fill with orchids tall. Is a TV going in here? Take another pic of room from windows.

Do you have recess lights in ceiling? Replace bookcase with a big potted palm. Get 2 and put other where floor lamp is put plant lights on floor behind them and light for a mood light at night. On wall where big sofa is add a very large 6x7 ft oil art work. On wall next to window a large 42" cut glass sunburst mirror.under that add a long chest in a color red lacquer add a very large lamp with a mercury glass base a d black shade on one end. Do you have a store called Z Galleries.? Zs has a hexagon coffee table in glass which would be perfect. If so you can get every thing I've mentioned at that store you can go on line too. Don't be afraid of color and design. Area rug should be a graphic design, bold colors.

Thanks Travis! The black light & bookshelf isn't actually part of the room just random items we put in there for the time being bc we had no furniture. I plan to add color & design in the pictures (wall art) and pillows, lamps & vases and most likely a different rug. That rug is just a temp bc we needed to throw something in there for the time being while I made decisions lol Right now I'm trying to just choose coffee table & end table & I just wanted something simple for that but my question is would a round 40" table be too big for this room? I live in Illinois. I found a table that's 40" that we liked for the room but not sure if it's too big. I want a glass & silver or chrome table ..simple. oval or round to go with the way we are planning to set up the room. Ignore the pictures above...that 's not what the room will be in the end..just was showing the size of the room & the shape of it in those is all.

Go back to the rug store and get something with some kind of pattern and color....plain beige will not improve the room. Then get some colored accessories using the rug colors for ideas. Art, a vase or two, pretty boxes, a soft throw on the sofa, a shaped mirror, nothing small. Try HomeGoods.

@felizlady The rug is not going to be part of the room...I am just looking for ideas on tables right now & I put up the random pictures to show the size & shape of the room. The black shelf & light are NOT part of the room either & the rug is going to be changed out & we will be adding pictures on the walls & pillows, lamps etc. We plan to bring out the color in the room & I already have the ideas for that. Just looking for opinions on table sizes now. Thank you though!

The room is a great space. I think that adding a piece (or two) of art right above the larger sofa could be a good way to begin the design and formulate a direction for the room. It might look something like this

It let's you virtually hang the art on your wall and see exactly what it will look like. You can download it on arttwo50.com - a lot of the art is really fantastic.

Like some of the above posts, I think a beautiful round or somewhat curved wood and glass table would be perfect in the space. The space is beautiful and large and looks to have great lighting and this will help keep the space open.

The room is gorgeous, all you need is a bit of color in pillows and maybe stationary drapery panels. I like the idea of a curved coffee table. Also maybe some color in you rug and artwork.

I really like how you set your sofa's. Also, I would add a cream rug in the middle of the living room. Don't be afraid to include some paintings as well.
