Black Window frames and mullions

What is your opinion of the black window frames and mullions? I love them, and am considering using them in our 1938 farmhouse renovation. Do you think they are classic or a fad?

I think you would be fine in using them for your renovation. What color is the exterior of the house?

The exterior will be either white, or another light color. The roof is a silver metal roof.

    Love!

have you thought about white though?

There were many dark sashes where I grew up , often greenish black. But all white clapboard was not ubiquitous there either. I think it depends upon where you live.

I love black window frames but have always associated them with modern architecture/style. I think with the metal roof it would look ok if you changed much of the exterior to a modern style - paint, porch, front door, chimney. Otherwise, white would be my choice.

Pale yellow with white trim and dark green sash was one combination where I lived another was grey with white or yellow trim and dark red or dark green sash.

I grew up in a town that was both rural and industrial and lots of people burnt coal so white for the body of the house was not popular 40 odd years ago.

A modern farmhouse would look awesome with black windows but never with mullions IMO. I think unless you are doing huge changes to the exterior I would stick with white and still no mullions and also no shutters . This place will look so much better with new windows and of course the iron supports which do not in anyway suit the house.

Love black on the modern farmhouse, but you have a ways to go before you've achieved the modern farmhouse look that calls for black. I suggest you go another direction - red windows more suitable to your little ranch. Are you changing the siding color? It might be feasible to achieve some of the look of the bottom picture - more of a Craftsman/ranch look seems to pick up on the architectural features you already have with your double gables in front. If that's too much to bite off, I would try to achieve the look of House #1.

Black is a classic! It's a timeless color choice. You do have to be thoughtful with other colors and finishes you pair it with but that would be the case with any design decision so no extra work there. Look for a high contrast color pallet to create a striking look. The recommendation would be to go with a white, greige, or gray for the majority of the body of the home and be sure to balance out the visual weight of the black with other black accents or another highly saturated color in the roofing, doors and/or hardware.

Best of luck with your renovation!

We will be changing several things on the front of the home. All the windows will be simple farmstyle windows, all the same height, but larger. We are planning to move the entry door to where the double windows are in the center of the front (and extending the lower A roof and adding a porch)

The smaller "A" is where the new front entry and porch will be. We will extend that A roofline by about 6'

Here are a few more pictures of the left side, rear and right side with carport which will become a screened porch with fireplace
