Yes, a love seat under the window and a floor lamp to the left, and then a coffee table and two chairs. I would remove the cabinet under your son's picture to give more breathing room. Cream curtain panels for the window to match the cream in the pretty rug. The love seat and chairs should have a lower profile so they don't overpower the room, although a similar color would be best.

I love these ideas. I have been at a total loss for what to do. I had 4 chairs stuck in my head and could not move off it. Never thought about the cabinet "crowding" my son's portrait, but I see it now. Thank you Suzyq and Ingrid!

Sorry, but I would start by replacing the area rug. Dark and dated. Everything will change if you change out the rug.

Just because a rug is a certain style doesn't make it good or valuable. An olefin machine made rug no matter the style will never be considered of value. It's just decor. Not a work of art.

I like your red rug. However when I clicked on your living room idea book, only 2 of the over 100 photos had red rugs, all the rest were very neutral. Also, very few had 4 chairs. Most had a sofa.

Ok, maybe a crazy suggestion but do you have any off white sheets or maybe a very light green.. maybe drape those over the chairs for a few days and see if you like the colors with your rug.

I can assure you, Beverly, that my rug is not olefin. As I mentioned earlier, the rug was costly. It is vegetable-dyed from Turkey, and we have papers signifying authenticity. We purchased from a reputable rug dealer. So, the rug, indeed, has value. I showed the close-up so advisors could see the rug's colors. I assure you, that olefin rug would look and feel nothing like mine.

Sunnysmom, that's a great idea. The portrait was done by a local artist, and I intend to keep it in the room. The frame is heavy - we had the portrait done when everything in the house had a Tuscan feel. We are remodeling and the frame can certainly be changed to blend with new furnishings. Thanks for your ideas - if you have thoughts about framing the portrait, I'd love to hear those too.

LOL, about rug and your reply to Beverly. Keep what you love, it makes your home yours. I would suggest a few accents in red for your room. With the red in the rug and your son's painting, a couple of throw pillows in red or a statement vase in red would tie in your two loves in the room. Look at a simple red frame for picture, a red that compliments picture and rug. Red frame may not work, but doesn't hurt to investigate, Good luck.
