Help! Exterior Ranch Update Desparately Needed!

last modified: 8 years ago

Hi there! Wondering what the community might recommend for an economical update to modernize our 1970’s ranch? I feel like color selection is tricky b/c of the multi-colored brick as shown in the pic and otherwise I’m just stumped on a change that will give us the best bang for our buck. I appreciate your suggestions!

I always say you can get any look you desire on a dime............Tell us what style or look you want for your home.

    Traditional? Contemporary?

    What colors do you prefer?

Brick can be painted but only with a special epoxy paint made to let the brick breathe - it is a porous material and moisture will be held inside the brick when sealed, potentially leading to erosion.

PS; landscaping to soften the driveway is critical here.

Honestly, the colors are pretty good. If you don't like the orange go to a blue door, try to color match the siding and paint the garage door that color, its the only real sore thumb here. If you want to paint the siding ( i wouldn't) go into a sage green color.

The bigger challenge is actually the landscape, this is what is lacking, and if you do that right the house will fall in line. I would also put larger lights on either side of the garage and a new porch light. you could consider putting an actual deck/ porch out front since the front door is slightly raised this could work.

As far as style goes, I would say we land somewhere that you might consider a “contemporary cabin.” We love natural/rustic materials and colors, natural light and lots of windows with no curtains.

When you say landscaping to soften the driveway, what do your mean?

    ok that helps a lot!

"Contemporary cabin" suggests losing the brick. Do you have the budget to cover it with natural cedar long pieces running horizontally? If not, you can paint the brick but you must use the special epoxy paint made for brick otherwise moisture will collect in the brick and lead to erosion and other problems. The vinyl siding will need to switched out in order to get the look you want.

Option: cover the brick with stone and then install the long cedar planks horizontally above.

If your budget allows, you would LOVE some skylights!!! It is not a big deal to do with your roof line so I hope you seriously consider it. This will give you the light and the look you crave.

Re landscaping: change the walkway from the driveway to the front door to a large sweeping "C" curve which would extend into the front yard. The inside of of the "C" will become a front garden; alternate small bushes here both evergreen and flowering. Plant several bushes along the right edge of the driveway making sure not to make a straight line so that it doesn't just reinforce the hardness of the edge - soften all of it with mulch surrounding the new plantings.

Lastly - replace the light fixtures with something that screams Contemporary Cabin.

I agree that the three items that would boost your home to the next level are:

    1) repaint the garage door to blend with the siding

    2) wide walkway to the front door

    3) landscaping

Right now your garage door is a major focal point, which is not where you want the focus, right? If you blend in the door, then the focus shifts to the front door.

The walkway needs to be at least 42 to 48 inches wide and a C shape would work.

Landscaping is the big thing that your home is lacking. Lining up bushes along the foundation is not the way to go. Large planting beds soften your front and make you home more welcoming. Get with a landscape designer in your area to put together a plan or two for you to implement as time and budget allow. An example of wide walkway with big landscape beds is below. I don't know your plant zone so you would need to get the right info from your local nursery or even in the gardenweb portion of houzz.

The siding color goes nicely with your brick and the rusty orange does, too. How about some plantings along the driveway and a couple of evergreen trees off to one sid?
