Starting Long, Narrow Herb Garden - need ideas

I'd like to plant an herb garden above the rock wall in my back yard. I'd say the garden would be about 2' x 40'. I live in south, central PA. The site gets full sun.

I need some design ideas for a long narrow garden. Since it is visible from the deck and patio, I want it to look pretty. Any suggestions? I'd like the typical culinary herbs as well as some 'pretty flowering' varieties. Thank you all.

Globe amaranth is gorgeous and the flowers can be dried for herbal tea. Your site would be attractive for nasturtiums which can be harvested to add a peppery flavor to foods. Sage, lavender, feverfew, passiflora, marjoram, wood betony, and thyme are worth while perennials. Spilanthes is a pretty annual herb. A variety of basils could be attractive and useful.

Why not consider inter planting with a few perennials? The important part of any plant selection is to find out what growing conditions you have ( soil pH , amount of sun, type soil) and then plant the herbs and or perennials that will grow in those conditons. Maybe others have tried. I have planted herbs with other plants in a container and they grew well and looked good.
