Selecting pillows for sofa. Help!

My current dilemma may seem silly, but I have no idea how to do this. Below is a pic of our sofa in the living room. I would like to bring some accent pillows to the sofa for a bit of texture and perhaps a spot of color. I'm CLUELESS about how to pick sizes and shapes to make them look good. Our pillows in the family room just sort of look thrown on. Are there some rules of hand when selecting sizes, etc? Thanks so much for your input!

I would choose artwork or photography first for your wall above and then use one of the colors from it for your accent color for the cushions and other accessories. Then your space will have a pulled togetherlook.Go Etsy.com and use their search engine for what you need I have a photography shop, nancyhehmann on Etsy and can customize any of your selections. photography can be printed on regular photo paper (if large, it should be mounted) or on canvas with a gallery wrap. With canvas you do not have to frame if you do not want to.

How about 2 matching but different printed ones- large animal (zebra) or city scene, and one solid grabbing a color from the others.love the sofa!!

I'm thinking of a neutral tone for the pillows. I think it will be quite awhile before I am able to decide on artwork.
    Questions:
    1. It is appropriate to use an odd number of pillows on the sofa?
    2. On this sofa, what would you recommend in terms of neutral colors, fabrics, and/or textures?

Thanks, linda987. We had it made custom from one of those custom sofa places.

Blue and yellow color should be able to light up the room. Combine different geo pattern for a modern look. 20" or 18" should be fine.

This is a very neutral room, so I'm a little afraid of a commitment to a color as of yet. Maybe I should just go for it.

    More questions:
    3. Should the pillows have a printed pattern?
    4. On a sofa of this style, would you only use three pillows - two matching on each side and a smaller one for an accent?

yes, odd numbers are better, and bring out your personality, fun, serious, what ever YOU like. Have fun shopping!!

I think I have a mental block when it comes to accessorizing. :( Here is the best I could come up with. Excuse the lousy cut and paste...

Okay, that looks silly. I do like the small, textured one though...

Also, I have tons of unused pillows around the house. From where is a good place to purchase pillow covers?

anne dee, that first photo reminds me of our living room. Thanks for posting it.

anne dee, I just looked at that photo again. That is actually very close to our wall color, although my pic looks much lighter. I've got a similar couch, chairs, wall color. Have you been to our home??? LOL...

Argh! I can't seems to find a good fit of pillows with this sofa. Why am I fine with selecting furniture, but can't seem to wrap my mind around simple throw pillows???

Here's another rendering. I think I have a mental block here. I like all of these pillows, but when I cut and paste them onto the pic of my sofa I don't think they look very good.

Can anyone assist me in providing some pics of pillow that would look good on this sofa? The room is very neutral. I can post some room pics if that is helpful. Thanks!

YOU DEFINITELY SHOULD DO COLORS. DONT BE AFRAID!! TRY SOMETHING NEW N DARING. I LOVE NEUTRALS N EARTH TONES AS WELL BUT I USE ORANGES TO BRING LIFE TO THE PICTURE. ANY OF THE PIC EXAMPLE GIVEN SO FAR ARE DELIGHTFUL. BUY THINGS AND TRY THEM N THE SPACE IF ALL ELSE FAILS RETURN THEM. MAKE SURE WHATEVER STORE U PURCHASE FROM THAT THEY ACTUALLY GIVE U UR MONEY BK N NOT JUST A STORE CREDIT.

daylightca, Carolina's point about finding wall art first is valid. It is going to be a focal point in your room and will give you a hint what kind of pillows and other accessories you need. It may be much harder to find the pillows first and then having to look for art that you enjoy but that will also have to work with your pillows.

It's a different story if you do not feel like adding much color at all. Then B&W, sepia or neutral artwork may fit your bill and your neutral pillows won't clash with it. These may work with your neutral scenario... Raisa

    Hi Daylightica,
try Etsy for pillow covers and here's a link to all kinds of ideabooks on pillows

But I think that your sofa looks good without pillows too.

No rules, use a graphic print. You are contemporary so keep look. Mix up size group in 3 s. pick accent color use it in small amounts around room. On yr sofa I would do one accent color I like teal, turquoise with gray even yellow would be nice. Mix with long narrow with large black and gray print withe accent color.

Add big 40 x40 contemporary art to wall over sofa. Bold colors. Hang 6" from top of sofa.
