Wonderful!! And remember what I said, you can trim it to size without it hurting anything to keep all the blocks very precise. It's going to make a great quilt.

I think my 1/4 in was a thread too wide because it measured a bit less than the 14". That's why we make sample blocks.

doesn't matter as long as they are all the same. If a bit narrow, trim the top and bottom to match width. But you might want to make a few before you decide. Be sure to share your finished top.

Oh great. That's the quilt that Linda made in purple and black isn't it? Do you mind sharing the dimensions of those strips? I think I could figure that out.

I think Linda would send you her "recipe". She did share it with some of us.

Al pieces are cut for 20 blocks, 4x5. The hardest part so far is cutting black. Really hard on old eyes.

Tool Granny- do you mean that you can sew a block and then trim to size? I’ve been wondering about this as it will help me make some decisions about my current project. I was concerned that it might weaken the seams to have the reinforced end cut off, but it’s getting sewn to another piece so I wasn’t sure how much that might matter. Thank you, I’m learning a lot as I read along!

The sample block was really made to get an idea of the colour and to check the process. Just made two blocks and they are right on. I changed the machine foot and adjusted the seam allowance. I also want to add that precision in cutting is important on this block. There used to be a sewing show many years ago, here in Canada. Madame de Bello was the teacher and her Mantra was " Precision, precision, precision." In cutting and in sewing.

Off to the dentist. There are some worn areas and a chip on one tooth. She wants to do some bonding. I asked if that was like doing a hot patch job on the road filling in pot holes. Yup!

Generally I find that consistency with your blocks is way more important than an exact size.... as long as you aren't swapping the blocks with other quilters.

So if you are trying to make 12 1/2" blocks, it doesn't really matter if they come out 12 1/4" as long as they ALL come out 12 1/4".

You are so right Jen. In this block, the black strips are 14 in. And since it is a square block, the width when all are sewn together should also be 14 in. I had to adjust my seam allowance one click to the right to get that measurement. And as Linda said, there are ways to trim to keep all blocks the same size. It went together quite easily.
