We recently had a flood in our home and thought we would take advantage of this opportunity to fix/update our home. Our house was built in 1983 and has not been updated since. It is an open concept floor plan with a very large oddly shaped fireplace. The currently layout of the home doesn't really lend itself well to having seating in front of the fireplace which we use and quite enjoy during the winter months. We would like to figure out a way to make the fireplace more of a centerpiece rather than a very large after thought.

First of all I am not a designer..... But I am currently planning on moving the kitchen to the location of the current dining room to be more in front of the fireplace and to have the island have a bench for a sudo breakfast nook (example picture included). The colors are a big struggle for me, because there is so much brown/orange in the home and the walls are so tall that I can't just repaint if I hate it. Since I am planning on moving the kitchen the majority of the brown tile will need to be ripped out because we don't have enough spare to patch the kitchen cutouts. We are planning on having the brown tile stay in front of the front door and in the kitchen with the rest being carpet.

We tend to favor cool colors, grays and blues, and have no clue where to begin to pick wall colors or cabinet colors. Should we paint the moldings? should we restain the wood floor darker? Any suggestions for layout, furniture placement, or colors would be so appreciated!!!!
