Need ideas! So my son plugged in his iPod touch into an outlet in my bedroom. Once he did that the other outlets in my room that had alarm clocks lost power but came back on (of course blinking now). Fixed the clocks, and outlets still had power. Later on tried plugging into the same outlet as iPod touch and now have no power in any outlets in that room. And the room next to it. I checked the breaker box for a tripped breaker but nothing. Should I assume it's just that outlet and replace it? What other things should I check? I have very little knowledge of anything electrical.

Almost certainly a loose connection at that receptacle (either on the receptacle itself or a connection in the same box). Turn off the breaker, and carefully pull the outlet from the box and inspect all the connections.

I'll give it a try thanks for the idea Ron.

Ok, the connections looked good on the hot and the neutral. But it's an older house and as I pulled out the outlet it looks like the ground is not connected to anything. It's an older outlet so where would I connect the ground? Or does that have to be connected?

A loose or missing ground wouldn't cause the problems you are seeing.

Are there any wirenuts connecting multiple wires in the box? The loose connection could be there.

A picture of the box with the outlet removed would help so that we can see exactly what's going on.

The breaker could be tripped but appear to be on. Push the breaker in question all the way to off, then to on.

I checked the breaker, I even changed the receptacle and it didn't work. So I'm getting power to all the boxes but when I plug stuff in nothing is working. The bathroom in our bedroom has a gfci outlet that will not reset either. What would be my next step?

It's unlikely that the bedroom outlets are on the load side of the bath GFI, but anything is possible (I've seen some pretty Rube Goldberg stuff). Have you confirmed which circuit breakers control which outlets? The bath gfi SHOULD have its own dedicated circuit independent of the BR outlets.

Move the breaker all the way to OFF and then switch it back on. Sometimes when breakers trip, you can't tell from the toggle position.

How are you testing for voltage? If you're using a high impedance DMM, you may be reading "phantom voltage." Buy a rubber pigtail socket at the hardware store. Screw a small (7-25 Watt) incandescent bulb into it, and use that as a test light. Careful with the wire ends, they'll fray unless you have a soldering gun and know how to tin them.

PS - If the Ipod's charger actually tripped your breaker, it's definitely time for a new charger.
