Chemical balance is paramount on plaster finishes. The plaster manufacturer will have guidelines for chemical balance to maintain finishes. Most plaster failures are due to improper chemical balance. The product is only as the application and the after care.

Any of the dark finishes or any finishes that use color pigments such as this one, are susceptible to mottling, an uneven finish. You may have a build up of scale causing the lighter finish. An acid wash may bring some color back, but may also etch the surface in the process.

I was happy w/application. I’m not happy w/fading so soon. We test our water weekly and balance as needed. It seems to me any chemical affects finish more than plaster manufacturers know or admit. Water analysis is my proof water chemistry is OK, no?

I'm having to replaster my pool again after just a couple of years. The color faded to an off-white from a deep blue. The installer tried to acid wash without success. He sanded back a piece and the deeper layer is still blue, but the outer is off-white. If the finish required special care the Manufacturer should disclose. Where can I find the manufacture's recommendation on chemical levels?

Your pool contractor or the plaster contractor should give you the guidelines on chemical start procedures, balancing and caring during the first 2 weeks, and then going forward after the curing process is complete. It's best to hire a company for the start up. Documenting findings during testing and adjustments made will be to your benefit.

Proper water chemistry on newly plastered pools is essential. I've seen plaster ruined in 2 weeks for improper care.

Call the plaster manufacturer or search National Plasters Council. They have guidelines on proper care.
