Should I be worried about my new mango tree (Herbert)?

Hello,

A co-worker bought me this small (young) mango tree from our local Lowe's Home Improvement store around August or September of last year.

I water it every few days and has done pretty good it seems until recently. Is it normal for the leaves to start looking like that? It's like something is eating them or something. It started happening when it got colder (so around Novemberish). I heard it doesn't like the really cold nights so I bring it into the house every night any time between 6pm and 10pm. Then before I leave for work (around 3:45 AM) I bring it back outside, so it doesn't seem like it could be from freezing...

I live in Oakley, CA if that matters. The spot that you see Herbert in the pictures is not where he sits during the majority of the day. I take him into the backyard where there is dirt...I don't know if that matters either but thought I would mention it.

Any other information I can provide to help me help him that would be helpful, I will provide to the best of my ability.

I'm not familiar with Oakley climate- is it more bay or more-say- Concord like? They like all the heat they can get,but hate frosts at that size.

Its already sending out growth,so what you should do is just wait a little longer and in April or May find a spot that gets all day sun,has good water drainage,and I would recommend mixing in some perlite with the soil you dig up- LIBERALLY- with perlite,maybe some compost ( mild) and if you can,a hot wall nearby will help.

I wouldn't worry about the foliage- its just been roughed up going from wholesaler to Lowe's,to you,inside,outside,etc.

They can be grown in large pots. But,in ground is what you really want..a tree you can pick real fruit from. Container growing is nice if you have ten different tree's..something like that. But one plant?

Just remember my law- PROTECT FROM 32F FOR THE FIRST THREE YEARS. After that they can take a light frost or short 32 in stride.

Here's my Manila ( going on 6 years in ground) with todays flower buds. The white dots- are whitewash from cleaning a paintbrush too close to the tree! Splattered.

Thank you for the replies...it helps a lot since I know nothing about this stuff!

(Yeah, Oakley climate is very similar to Concord...we are only about 20 miles away from Concord)

Rebecca, Look at YouTube of the Northern California Mango in Fremont,and also at Vegan Gardeners "Antonio" Mango in Arizona and why you need to cover.
