I would remove the mirror from the mantel. I don’t think you need anything there.

IMO a piece of art beside the window by yht plant would be nice a more colorful rug with pillow color taken from that. Your mantel is high so just the candles will be fine

Hopefully your not committed to the rug...same as other comments. Perhaps pillow color change. Bit too much monotone colors with the plain wall color..

Paint the brick. Move the chairs to the other side. Invest in curtains and a new rug.

Some better lighting in the form of floor and table lamps would improve the space!

I would paint the brick white to open up the space which feels heavy with the dark furniture and brick. I would also try a lighter color rug.

I like the brick and mantel because their rustic finishes and the leather furniture echo each other. No mirror above it though. Be on the lookout for art as you start to finish off the room. Or just leave it empty.

The room looks strange with those big chairs blocking the fireplace, which is such a big feature of the room. Try angling the chairs at each corner of the rug to create a conversational grouping that faces the sofa. That will open the fireplace. Stick some big chunky logs in the firebox to echo the mantel.

A new rug should pick up the golden tones of the floor and saddle color of the furniture. Think abo.ut wooden blinds/shades for the windows

If you are certainly keeping the chairs there, I would take away the mirror and do nothing at all to call attention to the strangely blockaded fireplace. I'd even take down the mantle and get chair pillows that are less of a contrast as to draw less attention to that area. The bricks, however, add a great color and texture and I would not paint them.

I'm digging your neutral pallet and would go for a rug that blends in with your current neutral color scheme. I'd think more about a rug with texture, nub, or chunkiness to it rather than going with a pattern or color. Your leather sofa is great and I'd love to see the contrast of the leather and texture of a rug.

I would remove the furniture in front of the fireplace and possibly put it to the right and perpendicular to the fireplace across from the couch. Is there room for the console table facing the fireplace on the other side of the rug?

I like the rug, the rubber plant and the dark leather with white walls. I’d get rid of the mirror and add a piece of art with both black and your chosen feature colour. I’d do red or dark teal.

The carpet is nice, but I think may be small for the room.

I can't tell, is the sofa within the borders of the room itself, or is it pushed back? If it is within the borders of the room, great!

As for what colors to add, that is a question that you must answer, that is an aesthetic preference that is highly personal.

You have painted your walls a light color, and you have no art work or rug yet so you have a lot of choices.

You do need something over the mantle.

When you go to friend's houses, whose rooms do you like? You must have liked someone's house with leather furniture similar to yours, right?

What was the feeling those rooms evoked?

Exciting like a modern art gallery or museum?

Stately and settled like an establishment gentlemen's club or country club?

Calm and serene like someone's home library or study?

Now that you remember those rooms and feelings, dig back further and remember those colors, or if not, in your mind, what colors for you evoke those feelings you want to re-create in this room? to see if you can find something you would like to hang over your mantel

Now, try to see if you can find something you would like to hang over your mantel. You don't have to commit to it, just pick a few things, that will tell you (and us) what you like as far as colors and styles.

Yes, move the chairs, change the rug, add a floor lamp to the corner & place art above the mantle. I would also consider drapery panels or dark wood blinds for the windows.

I would keep the 'primitive style' that has been started.

My gut reaction was a larger size area rug is needed. One with a free flowing pattern would be nice, something with random circles or waves perhaps.

1. I agree, move the two armchairs across to the opposite side and if space allows place a small side table between them. Add a vase of flowers or any table décor.

2. Move the sofa forward a few more inches, place a sideboard cupboard or console table behind the sofa (this will also anchor the sofa and stop it moving backwards). Add table lamps or plant pots etc ( whatever you like) on the sideboard/console table.

3. Place art work not a mirror on the wall above the fireplace. Add a basket of throws or cushions besides/ on side of tv cabinet and keep a set of small nesting tables on the other side for when you have guests.

4. Because of the leather chairs, I would actually have a red pattern far eastern rug on the floor. It needs some colour and warmth and that would do it. You can then add cushions ( and choice of colours for throws) could be centered around colours in the rug.

Nice room. Some bold interesting artwork that you LOVE instead of that mirror will add life and interest to this room.

Unless you need the chairs to watch tv, I would try them at slight angles facing the couch on either side of the tv. If you wanted to keep the mirror, try turning it 90 degrees so it is taller - though I would hang a bigger art piece over the mantle.

I’m surprised no one has yet mentioned that you need to bring the furniture in closer together, right now, it’s too far apart to use the coffee table. If you move the chairs across from the fireplace, get a small accent table between them.

Select art that is vertical, not horizontal.

Definitely move the chairs so they are not in front of the fireplace. Once that is done, we recommend getting art for above the fireplace. Then add a rug that has some browns or is neutral.

Hi all! Still need some help. I purchased a new rug and moved the chairs out of the way....but still looks bare. What else would you add? I am not crazy about the artwork above the mantle but haven’t found anything I love enough to put up there. I’d love to keep the room neutral with maybe one color to add-possibly blue?? Another vote...and I also changed our media console.

I think several people have suggested you angle the arm chairs closer to the sofa so it becomes a “conversation” area. With them jammed up against the console, they look like an afterthought....like “yikes! I have these chairs and can’t make them fit”. Hard to have a conversation clear across the room from someone. Maybe a slightly smaller ottoman would facilitate.

I think it looks really nice. I’d just pull the two chairs out from the wall and give them a sassy little angle. I don’t see any lamps. Not usually my style, but one of those floor lamps that swoop over the sofa would look nice on the left, to give some symmetry to the nice fig plant on the other side.

Yes I agree, chairs need to b pulled out taken away from the wall, and placed on the rug. Either facing each other on either side of the carpet, or on an angle on each corner of the carpet.

I would white wash or paint the brick, move the 2 chairs in front of fireplace to the other end of rug. Replace rug with something with color and pull out one of those colors for throw pillow and accent piece on mantel and small side table on the right.

Just a few more tiny suggestions. You could add some more throw pillows that have some color in them. If you like blue, then use pillows with blue. There are throw pillows and pillow covers with blue suede and blue leather, so they won't slip on your leather furniture. Also, pillow covers of velvet shouldn't slip either. Look at Gump's and Horchow for some ideas.

In addition, a large floor plant with more leafiness at the base such as an areca palm or a kentia palm would look good.

A large textural container such as a big basket in the corner would corral the children's toys and look attractive.

On the mantel on the sides of the painting, I would remove the white candles, they are bland and monochromatic and do not add anything.

You don't have to put anything else on the mantel now.

Wait until you find something you like that is interesting and has color and texture.

When you have a little money, you can purchase a soundbar (they are approx. $200) to place on the media unit or mount on the wall under the television and then you can rid of the speakers.

Very nice! I think it looks unfinished because of the absence of drapery panels. All the colour, texture, all of the work in the room is in the bottom half so it looks unbalanced.

And I’d paint out that fireplace brick. It fights.

It looks nice so far. Everyone keeps suggesting you move those chairs but you haven’t listened. It would look so much better. Right now you have too much crammed together on the tv wall. Try moving the chairs please.

I agree with Tina Moore, and highly suggest you move those chairs. But in the end obviously it's your house your decision.
