Where do you have organization for mail/kids school papers/maybe laptop? I'm changing cabinets, counters, sink, island and floor.

I know there is a difference of opinion on adding a desk to the kitchen, but if you don't have a home office, I think it's a good place for one. If you have room, I would consider something like this wall of cabinets and desk area. Will that give you enough room for a dining area? Given the chandelier, I am assuming that is your eat-in area? Do you have another dining room? One thing that might prevent me from adding a desk would be if that were my only formal eating area - you may not then want your mail, computer, etc. visible.

Do you drink wine at all? That would be a great place for some wine racks. Here's some examples of the work we can do

I would make it a conversation/sitting area. Two club chairs, a round accent table and lamp or if you are keeping overhead lighting, add a pendant light. Everyone loves to be in the kitchen!

Could you do a floor plan sketch of where you are thinking of going with the room so far? It is hard to get a true sense of the room size from the pictures.

You could add a dining room sideboard ... match your cabinets, or in a funky color ... with some shelves/wines glasses?

Try using a screen capture or snipping tool, assuming it is on your computer in a program that won't load here.

Usually the sink is the hardest to move and then the stove. Just to keep that in mind. The opening to the left looks out of proportion on your drawing. Is it a doorway? how wide is it?

The doorway to the mudroom is 32 inches. I think the appliances work well where they are, so I don't need to move them. What is your opinion?

So the cabinet wall is 16 feet PLUS a 32 inch opening? I am still working on an opinion. Basically I prefer to move as little as possible.

I'm confused. Are you keeping the existing island or building a larger one with an overhang for seating?

I'm redoing the cabinets with a distressed look and darker stain, new granite counter tops, the island will be distressed black w/ lighter brown granite- 6' w/ overhang for stools. I need to know how to have a cohesive look of cabinets/organizational area around that corner across from frig.

I am not getting my walls to line up correctly on my sketch. If the cabinet wall is16' plus a 32" opening, then the wall opposite the refrigerator seems to be 12' what am I missing?

Yes, the wall along frig, sink is 16 foot long. The 32" opening is the doorway to my mudroom.

Then the numbers on the other side of kitchen don't add up.

I maybe a .5 foot off, but its pretty close. 16x12

it should add up to 18-8 ish.

I accidentally put 3.5 at the entry instead of 6'. Sorry, I've never done that before and I was converting to inches on my sketch. It's pretty close.

Ok, makes a bit of a difference as to what might fit. I will ponder a while.

If you move the fridge to the opposite side of the wall, you may still have room for a desk area. And you open up the entry from the mudroom for island expansion and more counterspace to the left of the stove.

It looks like from the mudroom entrance to the empty wall may be more than 12'. What is the space between your stove and the island? If it is indeed only 12' and you would like the overhang on the island, it's a bit too narrow to add desk cabinet. But you could choose a narrow desk to blend with your cabinets.

Unless you want to go for a major remodel, these are good options. The next step up would be to move the cooktop to the island.

Fred S, is that a corner cabinet? Everything eles looks pretty much the same except for the island stools.

Yes a corner cabinet. I think once you put an overhang on your island, there won't be room for much else. So go with a bigger island, or a simple corner cabinet. Just my 2cents.
