Mine is always down (Janome). I use the knee lift to raise it when sewing. Default is down.

Mine is always up unless I’m transporting the machine. The only reason I put it down then is because it’s down when I pick it up from being serviced. :)

Mine is always up at the sewing table, but if I cover it with the carrying case, it has to be down to clear the cover. Mine is a Pfaff.

I leave mine up until I have to move my machine, and then I put the presser foot down. I don't have instructions stating to do that. It just makes me feel as though every moving part is more secure when it's down, I suppose.

Years ago I was either told or read that you should leave it down but it's been so long I can't remember why.

Hmmmm, interesting question.... I think mine is up, but down with a piece of batting between the foot and plate when moving. I don't think there are any instructions with my machine either....it's a Bernina.

I've never thought about it. I just turn the machine off! I think it's up. I do know when I first turn it back on, it puts the presser foot down (making it difficult to thread!)

My foot is down with a double piece of fabric under it and the needle run through the fabric. That’s how it comes back from being serviced. If I’m just taking a break from sewing for an hour or so, I’ll turn off the machine but leave the foot and needle in the up position.
