Family room help!

last modified: 8 years ago

Hi Houzzers this is our family room. To start off I have 2 small kids 2 and 4 with grubby hands so i'm not looking for super decorated, just functional and more attractive.. My husband really wanted a sectional that was comfy so I realize it isn't the cutest and is too big for the space but it is here to stay.

My goal is I would like to make this room a bit prettier. Any suggestions? I really dislike this shaped window so I was thinking curtains.

I also need counter height bar stools and i'm unsure of what color to look for. Pics below.

I just read through all these comments and I love what you've done with this space so far! It looks great and I love that you're making the space both look nice but still be functional for your family! I'm not sure where you've settled on by now, but I have to say my favorite design was this set up for your curtain's making the window not look curved anymore.

But this these rugs, pillows, etc was my favorite.

Okay thank you for the explanation! that makes sense to me. Okay so can I get away with the rod I have now my husband may literally kill me if I ask him to put up another rod I pretty much plan on ordering the drapes you linked and trying them. I haven't had a chance to shop today as I've had back to back meetings I'll take a look tonight.

What is the rod color? So many images what one is up now? Bronze?

I really like those darker blue draperies.

Actually I just looked at it and it says the color is bronze. It looks black to me.

Thanks Verona! That means a lot :)

I'm looking at the chevron tv stand and I don't love it...I'm trying to because they just sent me a birthday offer that works on furniture so the price would be amazing but i'm still blah any other suggestions? I actually like the ivory ones suggested above but i'm guessing they wouldn't work well with the neutral curtains.

I would not do white or cream...you need something to balance out the space...let me look at the other choices...that’s to bad it would add some interest..but I understand...

What is the TV size and will it still be hung really high like in one of the images...if so would lower it or put it on the stand on a lower cabinet...what is the wall space length available?

What are your local furniture stores I can look at them online to see what they might have in media cabinets.

Can anyone do a mock up in this space with the world market chevron media cabinet? Would be so appreciated!

Tv will stay where it is because the wall behind it has built in speakers so where we can drill is limited. TV is 70 inches, we have Rooms to Go, Ashleys, American Signature, Pottery Barn, West Elm, Ethan Allen, Hudsons, Baers, Badcock, Kanes, Scan Design. We have tons of furniture stores most big brands are available here.

The artwork is way too small and hung way too high. The middle of the artwork should be at eye level. It is a common mistake many make. If the artwork was bigger, the couch also would look smaller.

Ameera...ok looked a bit...because of the height of your tv you need something to fill the space between the Tv and top of cabinets so looked at consoles instead of tv cabinets they are to low...Ashley Furniture has a few nice pieces..they are 36” tall..put in a neutral one it has a dark top and a good heavy look to compete eith the tv and sectional size..let me know your thoughts?

I love the idea of adding pillows to the sofa. Maybe have them coordinate with whatever window treatment you choose.

Also, it seems like the coffee table is a bit small for the sofa size. maybe a more square and a tad bit bigger.

Good morning Ameera..was thinking? Is the entire sectional reclining? If so a big coffee table really is not needed..you can’t even reach it ....maybe think about two small round or square bunching tables that can be moved aroundas needed they could be upholstered with the top flips to be a tray...I think we could find something in navy blue print...just thinking out loud...let me know your thoughts?

I loveeeeee the white one! But I thought you said no white lol Coffee table can go and I don't care for it to be replaced. And yes all the pieces recline except the wedge.

I thought you would...I liked the dark wood top and rustic heavy feel of the piece and it will balance out the room for sure! Great price! With the light drapes and woven shades it will really start to come together beautifully! Trust me:)

think of it this way..each color in three...

    three brown....sofa...woven shade...dark wood top on console/

    three neutral....drapes....console..pillows

    navy blue....pillows...throw blanket....counter stools?

Just an example of how to pull it all together...art is a great way to add a accent color too! We really need to work on art and photos girl! To high and wrong sizes...but that should come last...no worries it is going to look great!

a couple cubed ottomans could be added just so the middle of the room doesn’t look empty...they are light weight and can be moved around....something to think about....I love these neutral ones I found...yes neutral..simple classic

    Or
    blue

haha there is a Ashley near work so I'll go take a look at it in a few. I have an ottoman similar to that in the corner somewhere yours maybe bigger

The pics are 16x20 canvas photos of my kiddos. Nothing fancy lol

Here are the items I would put together to complement your room...

the 16x20 photos can be hung together stacked (one on top of the other) about 3” apart to make a better impact on the wall.

2 square ottomans would look best side by side in the middle of the room.

Remember the console is not a media cabinet but you would just drill a hole in back to pull wires through if needed for components...The height and size will really look great!

Ignore the curved shape of the window and treat it as a standard rectangle using a standard curtain panel here you can introduce an accent color something that compliments and hopefully lighten ups the brown. Adding a shade or valance as others suggested will easily disguise the void at the top.

Looks like you've received some great suggestions for rugs and stools! I've included a link to a coffee table that's a bit lighter and would be more complimentary to the scale of the sectional.

    https://www.urbilis.com/simplicity-teak-coffee-table/

It would also be nice to add some life to the space through plants. I've linked a clean ceramic planter that is bottom heavy so not easily toppled by the young ones!

Designer Drains: the owner of the house is asking for help with her living family room, not a remodel of her house (i.e. island). Not everyone can have the perfect house... or hire a designer....

The ottomans will be the size of her existing coffee table and easy to move..all the sectional is recliners..so no need for a full size coffee table if any..

Hey! No I didn't we had a death in the family so we had to take an impromptu trip. Won't be home until Friday so I'm hoping to get back to it next week.

The curtains were delivered and so we're the samples so I have a few packages waiting.

no Glass tables with 2 and 4. Storage ottoman to hid toys. Washable pillow covers in bright colors to change with seasons or spills.
Can you fit a potted tree in corner behind sectional? I love arches and niches but yours are oddly placed and sized so hiding those is a good idea. maybe a decorative screen. let kids create a splatter painting on a big canvas drop cloth.
Could sectional be split into two facing sofas with tv on the window wall ? That shelf may fit better in kids room. Replace it with some floating wall shelves or a large sturdy bookcase which could help balance the heavy sectional.
My baby is about to start collge and we still have the kid proof brown leather. I hide it with light color throws. good luck

Ameera..oh so sorry to hear of your loss:( no worries just here when you need me...

Am I the only one that thinks the TV is way too high?? It needs to be lowered, a lot.

Most sofa seating heights are close to 18 inches above the floor, and eye level for an adult seated in a relaxed manner is about 24 inches above the seat. That puts the optimum, center-of-television height for a typical seated viewer at 42 inches (18 inches + 24 inches).
