Remodel Time, Help Please!

We have been in our home for 25 years and it is time for a remodel. Everything needs to be replaced. This projected started with me wanting to remodel my kitchen( for like the past 25 years) In addition, all the downstairs floor need to be replaced. The kitchen, family room and dining room all open to one another. The kitchen has vinyl flooring and the family room and dining room have carpet. Although I will not actually do anything till I have all plans in place for each room, I am starting with the family room for ideas as it seems a bit more manageable then the kitchen. I need help with a new furniture arrangement and also advice on floors. I am getting new furniture, the fireplace needs to be updated etc. Although my current room feels very dated ( Tuscan colors etc ) I am not a modern style person. I also noticed that most of my furniture has curves on the corners. I am drawn to non severe things, more soft, neutral, creams and whites. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

hi, you have some lovely bones going there. i will say i recommend no more carpet. wood or fake wood and rugs ithink are much better. sorry can't remember that name now. I am not good at colors and styles on that .

what is it you want to do in the family room? You do not have a tv? how many normally sit there? if you get a chance it would be great if you saw a picture that inspired you.

    talk tomorrow.

Madalyn, can you add a photo to your next comment showing the 1/2 wall. Wondering if your TV can go there at eye level while seated, similar idea to this photo. How big is the TV? How tall is the 1/2 wall?

I would also cross post in the Home Decorating forum as those folks are excellent with decorating needs. This forum can also help but is more geared to the nuts and bolts of remodeling, like changing walls, etc.

yes, cross post/copy paste in Home Decorating please..and do mention which furniture you'd like to stay..for example I like your rug and armoire while you might be very tired of them. The more info about your wants/needs for the room-the better..helps with suggestions tuned to you and your lifestyle and preferences.

Hi Everyone and thank you for the input. I will try to figure out how to cross post. FYI The half wall is too small to use for the tv. The tv is currently in the armoire. The size of the tv is limited by the size of the armoire. As you can see it blocks a window. I was thinking of getting a new piece of furniture for the tv and put it on the large wall because then I could also see it from the kitchen. I will move the armoire elsewhere in the house. I like the rug AND I am going to move it else where too because I need new fresh colors. I was thinking of taking down the half wall but I don't really gain any advantage from doing that because if the way the room is constructed and shaped.

Actually the blue piece is on a wall between the family room and kitchen. Its actaully an old dresser that I refinished. I am going to move the large armoire totally out of the room. Its too small for a bigger tv which i need. I will most likely get a piece of furniture for the new tv and was thinking it could go on the big wall as I am not a fan of over the fireplace TVs. Everything in the room is going to be replaced. Im looking for furniture and furniture placement ideas. Im open to all suggestions.

can we get an idea of what kind of flooring you will getting. staying w/carpet or hardwood? will you do hardwood all throughout if you do choose that?

and, give us an idea of the type of sofa and color you like. Right now you've left it too wide open. we could post 500 different selections based on the info given.

So, post a few pics of the sofa styles you like, and a color, or show us some room inspirations you'd like to see for your room. Can you take one more pic from the angle of you standing in the far corner to the side of the chairs? I need to see the rest of the wall where the blue dresser is. also, a pic of what's in front of the couch area. (can you mount a tv on the wall anywhere in that room?)

(for the record, I don't know how you've lived w/that wall color!)

    Beth,

The wall color looks worse in the pics lol.

I am debating between hardwood in all rooms on the first floor or replace the rooms with carpet with carpet which would be the family room and dining room.and office. The kitchen has vinly currently but i would not replace that with the same thing. If I do hardwood I would not go to dark.. Meduim to light and I like the wider and mixed size planks. I dont know if it woudl be better to do everything the same or do a combo of both hardwood and carpet to save some money that i then could put into the kitchen

The tv is currently in the armoire. As you can see it blocks a window. I was thinking of getting a new piece of furniture for the tv and put it on the large wall because then we could also see it from the kitchen. I will move the armoire elsewhere in the house. I like the rug AND I am going to move it else where too because I need new fresh colors. I was thinking of taking down the half wall but I don't really gain any advantage from doing that because if the way the room is constructed and shaped.

I have at least 3-4 people sitting in the room regularly and it would be great if it could seat more. I would like it to be comfortable seating. Currently I have the sofa, a chair and half plus ottoman and a leather chair ALL of which need to be replaced. Everything in the room can go.

The blue furniture is on a wall between the kitchen and family room. I just showed it so you could see how the family rooms opens into the dining room. I love cream and whites - warm colors. I try to like gray but honesty I just dont love it. I want to create a warm comfy space. I am 100% sure that I will do white cabinets in the kicthen which is open to the family room. Currently I have oak kitchen cabinets.

Here’s more pics of the room and the view into the kitchen

Yes, send the armoire to another room and open up those windows. Sofa on the half wall and TV on a long console opposite. Then reverse the chairs, Maybe replace them with smaller ones; they look like they crowd the space.

Thank you Groveraxle. The current chairs are going. They are beat. Do you think the room is too small for a sectional? And if I put a the tv on the large wall what would you put on either side of the piece of furniture that holds it?

no sectional. if you keep sofa on same wall, you may be able to do a small connected chaise on the far end. otherwise, just do a sofa and new chairs.

so, if you can't do the sofa like grover is suggesting, what about removing the mantle and putting the TV over the FP? Some people really hate it, but I don't mind the look. I would never cover up those windows you have!

if you did grovers layout,,,pretend the window behind sofa is your kitchen area and ignore bookcases. the tv is on the wall you can't see w/a console.

And I love love these colors. I would do your fireplace wall in black like this and tile your fireplace in something that compliments it. bright white trim. soft fluffy furniture. Maybe do the same type of blinds for your windows. I love how this room is one. I'd like cement tile for the fireplace instead of this stone, but otherwise it's perfect.

again,,your layout. ignore window and pretend there are two next to FP.

you could do a set up like this and skip the chairs. just do a few ottomans in front of FP. love the idea of a new light like this.

I'm trying to post pics of FP with windows on each side so you get an idea.

imagine these doors are windows. no TV in here tho.

i too vote for 2 sofas and some chairs perhaps. I would try for an L, but not using a sectional but the 2 sofas, one faces the fireplace,, one faces the tv and the two chairs are on either side of the fireplace. what is your color preference, blue? did you want me to ditch the rugs i gave?

Thank you everyone these are great ideas. Having fun I am not doing blue. I am more of an earth tone , creamy whites type person. I can’t do Grover’s layout exactly. I cna do the sofa on the half wall but the chair and half would not work. That is the sort of walk way area between the family room and the kitchen.

I put the chair-and-a-half back where it was. It just won't be able to watch TV.

A blank floor plan to scale if you want to print and play around with furniture:

    One possible configuration:

I like the style of your current furniture - in fact your couch is nearly exactly like mine - but I think everything you have is too big for this room. Especially the armoire. It’s lovely, but too big.

I’d look around for a smaller-scale couch and pair of chairs and a thin, low and wide tv stand. Definitely no sectional.

You said you can’t put the tv on the half wall because the wall isn’t tall enough? Well, MAKE it taller.

If your goal is a whole home, you’d better start with a master plan for the whole house, and an adequate budget to cover it. Then your designer will help you apportion that budget according to each room’s needs. No point in spending 15K on new couches for one room if the total budget is only 100K and you have a kitchen and bathroom remodel that need to happen within that whole home redo.

Hire a designer for a comprehensive approach.

But ditch the elephants in that room. It’s too small to house that many of them.

Havingfun. FYI I like pillows 1,2,3,5,and 6. I am not sure I like any of the rugs because they seem too modern and I currently have a sofa that has back pillows. although it is comfy its. Apcin to be fixing pillows all the time so I was looking for a different design. Also what was really helpful wa to the sofa in white like that. I am not sure if I could pull that off because it would get too dirty. We have two dogs and we let them on the furniture. I think I would have to go more taupe or a soft earth tone. Thank you so much for doing this. I find it very overwhelming. The things you showed me helped me clarify some things.

dear madalyn, probably my brain, but i am missing much of what you say. I removed the rugs, you did not like so modern or so white, right? The sofa has the covers on so you can remove and wash, everyone who has them, swears by them. I did not understand apcin? and do not understand different design, i have most, just need guidance. did you want something more like this?

May I ask where you purchased your armoire? I love it!

The armoire is Ethan Allen. I got it quite a while ago. I have my tv in it. Unfortunately it blocks a window. The reason I am not going to use it any longer is not so much because of the window. I need a bigger tv. The armoire will not hold a bigger tv than what I have now. I was actually going to sell the armoire but once I closed the doors ( which are usually ope) and really took a hard look at it I decided not to. I really love it too.

Havingfun. What I mean to say was that those types of pillows on the back of a sofa are a pain to maintain. They are comfortable but you have to constantly fix them. I like most of the throw pillows you posted before. I am not sure abut the other furniture. I dont think I want a glass table.

Also I just checked out the sofa. They have others with slipcovers as well. Its interesting to hear you say that people swear by them. Now I am intrigued and will do some research. I always felt cautious about buying furniture without sitting on it!

I have a few solutions to that. you can go to mortar stores, find something you like comeaway with the design name and numbers, then look on line. I find they usually use the same numbers and name. Shop carefully, but many have great return policies, etc. Many stores, like walmart- whom you are now saying no, no. but, they way more online than in store- even expensive things. you order online, if returned to the store, no fees at all. a store i think is pretty good in many things is pier 1. i do not do pottery barn, restoration hardware, or crate and barrel, i find their pillows-as an example, are made with manmade fabric like poly. yet still expensive. almost all of amazon, and my other stores are all cotton, linen, silk. I also do not shop wayfair or overstock, they seem to have more complaints. maybe you should just have statement pillows.

Also the glass table was a side table. provides extra protection for it. but can still show. don't know what happened to the main table i had.

Thank you for all this valuable info. The pillow info you shared is really interesting. FYI I have never posted on this site before and sort of don’tknow what I am doing. If you read though this thread you will notice that someone told me to cross post this on the Home decorating forum. I think I did that correctly but have not received one response from that thread. Do you have any idea if that is normal?

no, it would not normally be normal, but houzz is the one calling shots lately. if you look at the top it says living room and remodel, and we don't even have those categories. I find they have been crossing all kinds of things. there are no true polls any more, for example.

yes..it's different tags, somehow. meaning: no one saw the post in Home Decorating(neither did I, I went to check)

things are a bit crazy, lately..from a technical standpoint

odd, when i look, there is never anything new in the other place - home decorating, it is all i see here. now what i know is that you need to make a comment or it will not come. hmmm let me look in your thread.
