MOST AWKWARD shaped living/sunroom/kitchen ever!! HELP!!

First, let me apologize for my messy house. Three kids, two dogs, travel baseball and cheer make it nearly impossible to keep it tidy. On to my dilemma....

Please help!! Our house has every design dilemma in the books. Odd L shaped open floorplan with very little wall space, multiple doorways, eve

n more windows, corner fireplace.... the list goes on. We have no idea where to put our furniture. Or how to break up the space. We have a new sectional that we are somehow trying to design around but we are at our wits end. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Without dimensions it's difficult to see how things fit together, but off the top of my head...

Have you thought about putting the sectional over in the windowed corner, like where the dog's bed is and putting the TV on the wall where the two accent chairs are?

The two accent chairs could flank the fireplace and the dining table could be somewhere under the ceiling fan.

I've gone around and around trying to figure out your floor plan and can't. Please post a sketch of your floor plan with dimensions.

Really nice space -- albeit awkward for decorating.

Would definitely face that sectional toward the fireplace and tv.

Consider investing in a credenza or other cabinet to use as a room divider rather than trying to use your sofa.

If you can put your dining table closer to the kitchen and turned parallel to your island/countertop, do. Pay attention to what effect this would have on your having overhead lights in the right places.

one thing, it may be no help, but if you can return the sectional that could be a big help. they can be difficult to work with.

Something to consider next time you're buying living room furnishings:

Sectionals often limit furniture placement options. Also, not that many people actually like sitting for an extended period of time without arm rests. Sectionals can be good for lounging about and snuggling with your spouse and can provide extra space for those occasions when entertaining; however, unlike separate chairs or even two or three seat sofas, if any one part of a sectional gets to looking worn out, that's a lot of seating space to replace just to get rid of the worn out part.

Have you tried placing the sectional opposite the French doors and using chairs for tv watching and/or relaxing by the fireplace?

First, I'd like to say thankyou and how appreciatve I am of y'all taking the time to try and help.

To give a better idea of floorplan, here are some photos taken after our remodel. Notice how the beautiful bamboo floors are now replaced with cheap, dark laminate. Long story short, we had a shoddy contractor who all but destroyed our home. The bamboo was laid without moisture barriers resulting in over 1,000 sq. ft. of mold damage. We had to hire Environmental engineer and mold remditiarion company for the repairs. He also removed load bearing wall without properly sized beam resulting in the house almost caving in. That required a structural engineer, new contractor and new roof. A $40,000 remodel ended up costing nearly $100,000.

I can try and sketch the floorplan with wall measurements if that will help? Please note, the couch in these photos is not the same one we currently have. And sorry about the really bad floorplan drawing! I'm about as good at drawing as I am at decorating;)

I sympathize with you on losing your bamboo. We looked into bamboo when remodeling our basement. One has to really do their homework. So many contractors/decorators suggest elements that are beautiful but just are not really made to stand up in that use. I am relieved to see you found a sectional that faces where it needs to, to make sense. Over and over here we see people with these huge couch pits and not much can be done when they just are not going to sit people facing where you want them to face. From all the examples of how they really don't work well in many rooms, I continue to be surprised at how many people are choosing these. A love seat and a few comfy chairs would give you more options and improve walking flow throughout most spaces. Many here do not want to admit the TV is the center we arrange our furniture around. Hiding that simple fact just doesn't really work. It is easier just to accept what is and figure it out. Maybe people are accepting that, and that is fueling the couch pit resurgence of the 80's? One has to be very careful what you choose fits and faces the proper way then!! I think two distinct seating areas is your only option. Possibly a game table or bar area if you are into that would work too. Awkward spaces seem to be the norm these days.

I definitely agree with the comment above to move the tv to the current bookcase location! I would then move the bookcase to the long wall to the right of the kitchen. I created a floor plan for you based on the measurements you provided. I tried to you what existing pieces you have and added a few pieces including a ottoman/bench for seating in front of the fireplace. Hope it helps!

    A few in room views...
@benjesbride I literally laughed out loud at your "behemoth" comment! So true! And to answer your question, yes we have had the TV there before. Do you recommend moving It back to that wall?

@suezbel, I've thought about moving the couch into the sunroom then putting the tv on the wall where the two chairs are. The only issue we may have is that the behemoth couch may prevent the French doors from opening all the way. And yes we considered putting the table where the couch currently is with a big rug. I suppose we would have to center it under the fan. Or would we? I just thought that it may look awkward to have such a large dining room area. If I didn't center it under the fan, could I create a sitting area of some sorts in there?

Melissa, I think you nailed that arrangement to a T!

    Bummer on all the problems.

Consider swapping out the spaces -- dining and living/sitting areas. There could be different ways to do this.

    One way:

Put the back of your sofa 8' or so beyond and parallel with your island countertop facing the opposite corner of the room. The tv could be placed near the corner on a cabinet at an angle -- but credenza height (so as to not block the windows) and pulled out away from the windows. (add a plant on plant stand behind it).

Put the dining table in the general area where you now have a sofa.

Create a conversation nook near the fireplace with a couple of recliners and/or add a desk and/or bookcases in that area for your home office.

    Alternately:

Instead of having the sofa set at an angle, just turn the sofa around to face the opposite direction and move it farther in that direction -- farther away from where the tv and fireplace now are toward the wall of windows.

Suezbell I am trying my hardest to understand what your saying but for the life of me, I can't picture what you mean. By placing the couch 8' beyond and parallel to the island countertop do you mean rotating it so that the couch is facing towards the corner fireplace/TV? In other words having the longest part of the couch facing the where the tv is now? As opposed to how it is now with the shorter end facing the tv/fireplace? And when referencing the corner for to place the tv and credenza do you mean the corner in the sunroom where we currently have the armoire at an angle? the I'm design illiterate. I apologize.

Hey everyone! I know this is an old post but the sectional was defective so get to pick something else out. A lot of people suggested to steer clear from a sectional so I’d be very appreciative if someone could lead me in the right direction as to what to get and where to put it. A love-seat and couch? Couch and two chairs? Two love-seats?

It’s such an awkward space and we’ve always had a sectional so I’m clueless!

    Thanks in advance!

oh my, you have had nothing but problems. so i would go with 1 couch and 2 chairs, never do the loveseat, never worth it. if you need more seating go to 2 couches, more add 2 chairs, etc.

One sofa + two chairs is the best most of the time. We have a sofa and two swivel, upholstered chairs. It's the fourth iteration of furniture our living room in as many years and it's the winner. The kids can be a little crazy with the swivels, but they're positioned in such a way to take advantage of the TV, the view and chatting with folks.

Resist the temptation to buy upholstered furniture that is oversized.

I would make an L dependent on how many watch tv. couch facing. 2 chairs in front of hall you can make them spin if you like.

We have a family of 5 so definitely need as much seating as possible. So you think a couch facing the tv then two chairs flanking either side of the couch? Or the two chairs directly in front of the couch?

I think your defective sectional was a blessing in disguise. When you have a space that constrains furniture placement, the last thing you need is a piece of furniture so large that it also limits placement.

with that many stevenik i would go with 2 sofas in an L shape.

Agree with 2 full size sofas.

Thank you to everyone! I swapped out the sectional for 2 full sized sofas and CAN’T WAIT until then come in next Wednesday! I truly appreciate everyone’s advice!

Well, what do y’all think? The brown chairs don’t match my color scheme but they will have to do until we can save some money for new ones. Any suggestions on how to enhance the room? Thinking I need a different piece of artwork over the mantle as well something to replace the photos on the wall near the hallway. I do plan on trying to move the armoire that is currently behind the couch but not sure where I’ll put it because it holds our modem, printer, kids school files, and all our dvds. We have very little storage in the house so I hate to get rid of since it holds (and conceals) a good bit of stuff. One thing I do plan on buying ASAP is a rug. Would love and appreciate suggestions as to size and colors that would compliment the light colored sofas. The rug need not match the brown chairs because we will be getting rid of those soon. Also, want to mention that the pillows on the couches and chairs came with the couch and I’m not crazy about the pattern on them. Definitely going to buy new ones but was thinking I should pick out a rug first. Right?? Then match the pillows to the rug. Thanks again for any and all help! Y’all are the bestest;)

I like the 2 sofas much better than the sectional. I would flip the sofa and the 2 chairs opposite it so that a sofa is facing the fireplace rather than the 2 chairs. It would also give better tv viewing to that sofa. I really don’t think the chairs look bad, but I think they need lighter pillows on them. I’m not the best at suggesting rugs, but I think you’re making the space appear less “awkward”.

I’m digging the 3rd one! My style is contemporary and/modern. Do
You think I need it to to be big enough for all the furniture to go on? I’d probably need a 9x12 or even 10x13 to fit it all. Or should it just be big enough for the front legs of each piece to rest on? Like an 8x10.

i know you are supposed to put front legs on the rug. i will leave that one up.

@oaktonmom I just swapped the couch and chairs but it didn’t work because the side door barely had enough clearance to open. I think if I move the armoire it’ll look more spacious. Thank you for the suggestion, though.

Glad you tried it, sorry it didn’t work.

i think as long as you don't need all that seating just put the chairs in place of the love seat.

someone said pillows up there, ooooh yummmy! i will show you a few sets of pillows first.

Love the last set. Where are those from? How many do you think I’d need? Four for each couch then one fore each chair?
I don’t love the animals. I like the others, though. I’m more into glam, modern type I think. Maybe Silvers or light (very light) green to match backsplash and walls. What do you think? Would it clash since my couches aren’t exactly modern.

The very last one and the third from the bottom that has the bling on it. But I also like the blue ones from the previous pillows you had posted. Should I pick out the rug before the pillows, though?

yes i think so, but you also have to make a decision on your color scheme.
