but it is less effort to add the autocloser. and cheaper. darn opener worked fine till i tried to use the reset button to allow a 2nd remote to work. could not make different remote work and than a few days later i found the old remote. which works fine.

It could also be, that the sensors at the bottom of your garage door aren't properly aligned. Have you tried resetting and re-aligning them?

If you're ok with your garage door opening up for 5 minutes randomly throughout the day and night? go ahead. and bandaid that s.o.b. But, if you want to do it right, get your current one fixed, or replaced.

If it's a older unit, it might be that a nearby neighbor has the same frequency and is opening your door for you. Or maybe one of your remotes if flaking out and sending a signal to open the door. Or perhaps the board on the opener is out to lunch.

i did reuse the wall push button.

it is disconnected now.

customer service is leaning towards a short in pushbutton wire or pushbutton itself

i should have used the new pushbutton

i left it unhooked for last 48 hrs and it has not opened again

Process of elimination. Hook it back up with the new pushbutton. If it happens again, its the wire, if not, it was the pushbutton.

Also, the photo-eyes that is in that photo (The two black squares) that is also the bottom sensors for the motor.

Are the properly aligned?? Sometimes if they are out of sync it can cause they issue you are experiencing.

They would cause a door to open out of the blue? First I’ve heard of that. Anywho, op already noted disconnecting the button and cable stopped the problem so it should be one of those things.
