shrub id to guide pruner

My neighbor who is new to plant care wants to prune a shrub for mowing convenience. He can't see the shrub. It is outside my easy chair window. The bushes are excellent shelter for winter birds and a hummingbird attractor. I thought it was a Weigela. But i see Weigela bloom in spring. This starts blooming mid July (we are at 1300 feet in zone 6). The blossoms are smaller than pictures online of Weigela. Blossoms are mostly white with pink to red centers (no pictures). Searches for summer blooming shrubs have not turned up good prospects. Help appreciated.

Can you provide some more info, even if you can't get a picture? (BTW a winter picture of buds and twigs would help, even without flowers or leaves.)

What size are the flowers, what shape (tubular? open? how many petals?) What shape are the leaves? How big? How tall is this thing? (Presumably pretty large if he's considering mowing under it.

For starters look at pictures of Hibiscus syriacus.

Yes, what floral said. Most folks here are reasonably good at winter ID. Post a photo of the whole shrub and then a closer photo of a branch as well would help. If the branch photo includes buds, even better!

'Pink to red centers" sounds like weigela, of the kinds with the same flower shape. Otherwise I would think Kolkwitzia - but that has orange centers. As do those abelias that have a noticeable center patch.

welcome to the forums ... but we need to ID the plant.. and to do that.. a pic or two will really help ..... use the camera/photo icon below the box you type in ... and it will post right here ....

guessing.. an easy answer is.. no haircuts at height ...

Thanks for all these suggestions. I have hibiscus. the shrub does look a bit like Kolkwitzia, but more upright. But, blooms starting July. Shape is more upright than Kolkwitzia.

I don't think I did a very good job with the photos. Hope there is some help there. David (No, the bush is not on my property, just on the edge of it.)
