Does oregano normally die back in fall/winter?

This was my first time going oregano. I grew from seed last spring.

I initially thought it would be Evergreen, like thyme, since it survived several hard frosts fully green. However, when we finally got into the lower teens and single digits, it did die back. Is that normal? Should I expect regrowth?

If your oregano established well, it will come back. I have a couple different varieties in the herb garden, and they die down, but come back every year. Not really sure what they look like in the winter, don't usually try poking around in the snow to see, hehehe.

Depends on your winters. Mine recedes to a scruffy clump but doesn't disappear like a herbaceous perennial. I'm sure yours will regrow.

Ok, thanks.

In early January, we got down near 0F (-18C) a couple times.

Your oregano will be FINE. Winter won't kill any of mine off in Zone 7/NJ.

Thanks.

Since I’ve never grown it before, I’m not really sure what to expect. Most of my perennial flowers, like mums and echinacea, have at least hints of life deep in the crown by now.

The oregano looks completely dead, but again, I don’t know when they start coming back.
