There's too much stuff in the room. Seating wise it should be whittled down to a sofa and two chairs. Those armchairs look a little dated, a newer fabric would help. Other than decluttering, updating the fireplace would really help. That white mantle looks really thick, and it might look better if it extended down the sides of the tile.

Do you have any concerns about how the room functions? If so, address that first before the decor re-do. For example, is there enough seating for conversation and TV watching? Is it easy to get around the room? Do you have more seating than you need? Does any of the seating need to be replaced?

There is a lot of furniture in the room. A question - could the corner piece go flat against a wall, or is it made for a corner?

Due to fire codes, couldn’t put legs on the mantel. I would like to keep brown sofa, rug and club chairs, piano and secretary

In terms of proportion, I'd center the piano (low and wide) on the longest wall, which is where you now have the leather wing chair. Put the secretary where the piano is now. Remove all other dressers, cabinets and plants.

Move the sofa a little closer to the fireplace, and put one club chair on either side in a U shaped arrangement, if the room is wide enough.

Your fireplace would look better with a much smaller mantle, or no mantle at all. My fireplace could have had a mantle but I like a more simple look so we omitted it altogether.

There’s too much clutter. Clear off all flat surfaces - or pick just one significant piece to go on them.

Block off or put a door with a touch latch on the space above the right hand book shelves.

I've painted out some of the items around your fireplace, including the mantle, and lowered your picture. The picture is really one of the nicest things in the room, from the photos you have shown us. Lowering it, and simplifying the area around it lets it really show. I'd also simplify the decor on the shelves to either side.

What about the wall color of the room?

I like the color.

I like the room, color especially. The only thing I would do is remove half the the accessories, rotate if necessary. But keep that cute dog in there, he’s ( or she) is the star of the room.

Yeah, definitely don't declutter the dog. He or she is precious! I agree with others the room could be lightened up in terms of color and "stuff". A great room, just a few changes to freshen it up.

I totally agree with partim. Also smaller (not so tall) art over fireplace. Piano too tall for lamps, display 2 or 3 photos only. Remove wreath and stuff on top of secretary. You could even pull one of your occasional chairs to the drop leaf to make it look like intended, a desk.
Paint is ok color but you could go lighter. I’m not keen on the square object over the piano. Would rather see prints or art on walls. Your room is not really dated, it’s cozy just needs a tweak to freshen up.

I thought the painting over the fireplace was too large too, but I like it without the tall mantle since it is lower. I really like the warm colors of it.

Last year I had a "this living room needs a change!" revelation. I had a hard time coming up with a vision so put off making decisions. Finally, one day I removed everything I could from the room, leaving only a sofa, chair, and a couple of case goods, which I knew couldn't be replaced right now. Art came down from the walls, decorative items and plants were moved to other rooms and miscellaneous furniture pieces were shoved to the side.

Seeing the room without all of the "stuff" helped immensely. I loved how open the room felt and the ease of moving through it. Much of the "stuff" never made it back in the room. My daughter inherited two chairs and some framed art. Curtains were moved to the guest bedroom. Goodwill got a load of decorative items I no longer covet.

My advice is to roll up your sleeves, take every single thing that doesn't have to stay out of the room. It will be a revelation! Good luck and have fun!

I agree. Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees. In this case, stuff. Remove all but the items you've said you must keep. If you'll box up accessories into three categories you'll be a lot better off. Label the boxes "Toss," "Warm" and "Cool," to eliminate part of them and separate the rest, so you can switch them out twice a year when the seasons change from warm to cool. I like the cottage feel of the room next door. If you do too, consider slipcovering the sofa in an ivory cotton twill. that will immediately lighten the feeling of the room. If the piano gets played, it shouldn't be on an exterior wall for its health. try it left of the large opening to its right. That secretary is the star of the room and shouldn't be cornered like that. I would give it that entire wall to its right. Put swivel mechanisms on your two club chairs so they can become more flexible. Then turn your rug the other direction. Place the chairs and sofa perpendicular to the fireplace. The sofa will have its back to the French doors and the chairs will float with their backs to the secretary in its new location. Then we'll see what else is needed.

ReARRANGE. If you can, flip the rug & rotate the sofa, relocate secretary to the piano wall. Place piano on the interior wall where the chest of drawers is now. Relocate the chest of drawers to: an end of hallway, entryway, or a wide stairway upper landing, or bedroom. Dark arm chair- create a reading space w/ the ottoman near the secretary (add a thin lamp), OR relocate the chair for visitor seating in your office or reading space in bedroom.

NEW: art over FP, piano, chest of drawers at its new location, coffee table. Art over FP should be wider than it is tall.
