Door locks for new house

Where is the best place online to order door locks / knobs. for exterior and interior doors? New build.. We are looking at Schlage products. We want them keyed the same.

I'd assume your builder would include locks ... so I'm thinking you're planning to replace the locks after they're done. You know, in case any dishonest workers kept /made a copy of the key.

Schlage locks are available at big-box stores. Probably Amazon too.

When you go to pick out your locks, look carefully at the package. Each package will be marked with a code number ... maybe something like "This lock uses key ABC123." If you look through the packages, you can find multiples with that same code, and they'll all use the same key. You don't want to wait 'til the last minute. If you do, your selection might be limited.

Alternately, a locksmith can change the lock so the same key will work ... but that's something of a specialty task, and you'll pay for it. If you were adding a new door to an existing house, this would be worthwhile ... but you have the option to choose identical locks up front.

I have one Emtek (front door), five or so Schlage eletronic locks, and a bunch of Andersen patio door keys. Getting them all rekeyed to the same key was pretty trivial. All you do is gather up the cores and take them down to the locksmith. Even if you have to pay, the amount is trivial and they will do it while you wait.

Ours are all emtek. We bought based on specs we saw online and love our selections.

We're using Schlage as well and found build.com to have the best prices once their coupon was factored in - I just ordered ours last week. They will key them the same for free.

With that said, I'm not having the keyed/external door locks installed until construction is done. I picked up some cheap keyed knobs at Lowes and installed those. They were only $8/piece so the workers can beat them up all they want. I put the key in a realtor-style lockbox hanging on the door (also available at Lowes for around $20) and the workers that need it get the lockbox code.

Emtek is close to top-of-the-line. Everything at HD is crap by comparison. For locks, I would only get ANSI Grade 1 certified.
