Thomcord grape vine in zone 5?

Is it possible to grow a Thomcord grape vine in zone 5?

Yes, but probably not without a fair amount of spraying in a humid area like western PA. I'm in NE OH and even regular Concords benefit from fungicide sprays here. I assume Thomcord would need more due to its vinifera parentage.

    ztom,

    Thank you.

I unwittingly grew a King Of The North that I planted in 2010 as a 2yr. old. It produced 60+lbs. of grapes in 2016 as an 8yr. old vine, however I discovered it is not the ideal Concord type table grape, having a very strong, almost annoyingly robust, sharp flavor. Then I learned it was bred primarily for commercial use, for juice and spreads, not fresh eating. It also was a monster grower, sending 15' canes a season.

I removed it last year (spring, 2017), and replaced it with a winter hardy Kiwi....which is coming out ASAP, and either Thomcord or St. Theresa will replace it...back to a grape vine again.

The Kiwi, another blunder, I later learned is very prone to spring frost damage....it is 'spring frost bedlam,' here, with wild swings every spring until mid-late May. When the cold fronts hit the Appalachians, they get stalled or bounce back, and sudden freezes occur. I'm better off with a grape vine. I have only one 4'X15' spot for a vine, so my choice has to be right on the money.

Thanks again for your help. What fungicide do you recommend?

Can't comment on your vine choice but you say you only have space for 1 vine. Since you are growing table grapes look at doing a Geneva double curtain. In your 15' can give each vine 7.5 feet. 4 arms each gives 30' of canopy for each plant or 60' total! You get to have 2 grape varieties instead of one, yield probably increase and you get excellent airflow for reduced fungal pressure.

You can grow each vine with 4 trunks for redundancy from winter kill as well.

I'll have to research the Geneva Double Curtain.
