Teepee for pole beans

I am sorry if you read this and think it is a stooopid question! But I've never used a teepee to support pole beans, they grew up the chimney on a trellis at my other house so didn't have to concoct some sort of support for them. Anyway, I was thinking of getting those silicone connector and making a teepee out of some 8' poly-coated metal garden stakes I have (they are very sturdy stakes). Easy enough. Here's the dumb question: Do I have to sink the legs of the stakes into the ground or does the teepee sit on top the ground and the vines hold it in place? If you sink the poles, how deep should they go? And how the heck do you get a good teepee shape if you have to sink the poles on a angle?
