IIRC, they grow best if they get some cooler temps during winter. Not too cold, but somewhere around 35 - 45*F (perhaps even 30*F).

You didn't say how often you fertilize, but maybe too much? Whatever I have read says approx. 2x/year to fertilize if growing in containers.

I do not really know much about them, yet have few for 6-7 years. I never had scale on any, but try to keep them cooler during winter when indoors - maybe that is the problem? There is some die-back occasionally, but so far nothing serious. I just prune off those branches (usually just few, and not on all trees all the time). They go outside as soon as weather gets more consistent during nighttime.

Do you repot them? Do you prune? Do you want to grow big trees?

Hopefully someone will chime in with much better info.

I’ll take your advice and move it outside sooner, so it gets some cooler weather before spring finally kicks in.

I fertilize every other watering, so probably about once a month in summer and rarely over winter. I’ve potted up a few times and prune every now and then as it can be quite lanky.

I’m not bothered about it growing bigger necessarily, but it would be great if it was healthier and had a fuller canopy.

As I said, I really do not know much about them...only mentioned what I do with mine. They spend winter at temps that drop to just 35*F overnight - so about 4-5mo of cool conditions. I only watered them few times so roots don't dry up completely. Daytime gets little warmer, but usually not much above 50*F or so - there is no heat, so only what sun warms up. I had back up heater set up to kick in when temps drop to 34*F since I overwinter some other plats there that would freeze otherwise.

I do not want my plants o grow big either, and will do some serious pruning this year.

I have myself been battling these exact symptoms on a 15 foot olive tree.

It’s been two years now and after a scale outbreak which is now gone; I

am of the belief it is overwatering.

did you try adding boron?
