TV/linear fireplace wall design

We have decided to place the tv above a linear fireplace in our new house. We are aware of the debate of the bad/good associated with this design, yet feel that in order to allow maximum light with a wall of windows/doors in the back and maintain an open concept, this option suits us best. Since we have not broken ground, we would like to make sure that we are planning wisely for this design. I do feel that the linear fireplace is considered more modern, but I do not want a super modern overall design theme. When looking at the plan, please note that the great room will have a cathedral ceiling (with stained beams) and doors opening out onto the covered porch. (The breakfast nook is being extended.) I plan to use light paint as to keep the room bright and light. I also had hoped for a white kitchen. My husband would like a large TV (at least a 54 inch width). I would like the fireplace to be as long as the TV or longer. Here are my questions which essentially are about how to design this tv/fireplace wall. 1. Would you do a built in with shelving on either side of the tv/fireplace or would you make that entire wall a large tile wall incorporating the tv and fireplace 2. Knowing the TV and FP will be black, yet wanting to keep the room as light as possible, do you think using black iron light fixtures, lamps, etc, will help make the black more integrated, yet subtle....maybe using matte black hardware in the kitchen? 3. Would you recess in the TV? 4. Mantle...would have liked to use a chunky stained mantle that repeated in the ceiling beams, but don't know if mantles are doable with this design? The first pic is inspirational to me, and though the design is different with the TV placed in the back, I do like the overall colors/tones, and also the stone tones surrounding the TV. The fireplace seems integrated nicely into the black tile(?)

Floor plan, but there have been lots of changes all around, and without getting into that...the great room, dining room and kitchen layout is the same. (Nook is expanded) Though we recognize the FP can go as in the plan, we are pursuing the option in this discussion (tv over low linear fireplace)

This pic below serves as some inspiration for the back wall. Though my windows will be white (black windows here doubles in price).

So I am a bit confused and I think you meant to give a link and it didn't go?

What I am gathering is that you are not doing the see-through FP as the design shows but instead are talking about the wall where the bedroom is?

My first thought is that you had better change the plans as the fireplace needs width and that wall doesn't have it. It will change the traffic flow a bit. You have probably done this but just checking.

Please clarify this actual location.

We had the same thought process with a long linear FP and a not terribly modern house. We skipped it partly because it is so different and more expensive. You also lose some space as the fireplace has width and you essentially make a whole wall thick to house it and the TV.

We also skipped it because, designing the color scheme around 2 large black rectangles was challenging. So what I am basically saying is we started where you are now and gave up. That might not be helpful.

I think a chunky rustic mantle would look confused. I would recess the TV.

Just looked back at your inspiration - that is a see through FP. Now I am really confused. Please clarify

Sorry for the confusion. The plans show a see through fireplace between dining and great room. But, in order to maximize the open concept, we wanted to do away with the see through fireplace and put a linear fireplace below the tv which will be on the bedroom wall. Below is an example of tv above fireplace.

Are you stuck with this house design?

Do you want a house with lots of natural light like your inspiration photos? If so, this house design won't give it to you.

A good solution to the issue you're having might be using a mirror or glass TV. Our TVs are created custom and they are built specifically to handle conditions such as being above a fireplace. A mirror or a black glass might be just what you need to keep the room looking and feeling open with a bright/reflective surface. Here is an example of what one of our TVs look like and hopefully it may help with your design ideas!

If the modern look that a linear fireplace creates is not your style, this would be the time to try and come up with something else? It looks like you are building a house, but the whole paragraph is compromises already, there has got to be a better solution.

A linear FP and TV looks better if proportional in width. I know this does not apply to all situations or walls but it is my opinion a linear FP should be at least marginally wider than the TV. I've strived to bring that into my design for the two FPs and TVs in great room and master bedroom. Below is a rendering from the middle of the room. Alcoves are 2' deep.

@Tim W the rendering is of wide plank hardwood in the family room section only. Still waiting for DWs approval or selection.

Are you planning a wood burning or gas fireplace? If wood burning this one seems like a great option for linear without being too modern - we looked at it but concluded we needed more height (and we're not dealing with the constraint of a t.v. over the fireplace, as we're generally not a fan of that, aesthetically or functionally). http://www.heatilator.com/Products/Longmire-Wood-Fireplace.aspx

That said, I would really consider an arrangement as in your first photo, with the t.v. next to the fireplace.
