I agree with you about the 2x2 mosaic. Good thought regarding a long niche. Love that bath you pictured.

Looking at other Lucente choices, there are a couple that might have more of a grayed green. I'll be heading the the Emser store this week to take a better look.

I think what looks like green glass in those two may be white. It seems to me you're working with an earthy palette with the walnut and gray green tile.

"Earthy" is what I'm looking for. Need to get to a few showrooms and see what is available.

Mayflower (and others), do you have any thoughts on the vanity back / side splashes?

I wouldn't bring in a new tile just for the backsplash. I would probably use the counter material if it's available in 2cm or whatever they use for backsplash.

If you find a mosaic for your shower that you think could work with the counter, you can cut down your wall tile for the backsplash. In that case, I think the mosaic should have some of the lighter color of the counter. The St. Moritz would be cut down to a large format tile (3x9? 3x12?) and topped with two or three rows of mosaic. Then you need a thin ceramic trim piece on top of the mosaic, which I would get in a matte glaze. Sonoma Tilemakers has a good selection in their Stellar line. You could even do a brushed metal Schluter edge with your contemporary design. Maybe a brushed stainless liner tile?

I would not do a mosaic tile on its own. Several inches of multi-colored mosaic looks very busy, especially in the linear format. I could only handle three rows of the one below. Using a plain tile as the base gives you the height you need without overdoing the mosaic. It also gives some separation between the mosaic and the counter and lets you use a mosaic that may not be an exact color match to the counter. It's more of a designer look than using mosaic on its own.

Heres my walnut 60" vanity with 4" backsplash, if this helps. I used a fake marble in my shower with a long liner niche like @Mayflowers shows above, but without the accent tile in the niche, just wall tile, like the rest of the shower.

I like the look of a simple backsplash using the countertop material rather than using a mosaic there. We used a 6" tall splash instead of 4".

We just finished our master bath last fall and we used the Emser Lucente Lazzaro for one shower wall and the niches. Lazzaro has a lot of light greenish-gray-marble colors in it. Lucente comes in a lot of colors. My local showroom only had 2 colors on display, but the Emser website shows a lot more options.

If you use Lucente I have one suggestion regarding installation. I don't know if this will occur with a different color, but with the Lazzaro color, there were some marble pieces that had black dots in them. That was fine as long as these dots occurred randomly, but it just so happened that some of them lined up in one area when being installed. The installer was so close to it that he didn't realize. His helper was standing further back and noticed. While things were still wet, he cut out the offending pieces with a utility knife and replaced them with a piece from another sheet. Just an installation detail I thought I'd mention.

Our colors were: Emser Uptown Sugar Hill for field tile in 12 x 24" (it's a light gray/concrete color with some variation), Lucente Lazzaro linear mosaic for one wall and niches, QDI The Rock 3" x 3" floor tile (charcoal gray), marble countertop and tub surround with marble splashes, white vanity cabinet and tub skirt panels, a large linen cabinet stained in a medium brown tone and some floating shelves also stained, and existing wood floors.

We thought a white and gray color plan might be too cold so we incorporated the greenish-gray mosaic and the stained cabinet, plus a teak bench in shower to bring in some warm elements.

ssdarb, Thanks for sharing the details of your master bath. It sounds wonderful. The Lazzaro has colors that may work for my project. I don't see it on the Emser website. I'll see if they have it on display in their showroom.

Your "installation detail" is one of the things I've been concerned about with my bath remodel. My contractor is a very experienced and well respected professional. I want it all to be "right" and trust that he will do the job. The details are so important and I don't want to find a problem that needs to be fixed. How often were you viewing the work in progress?

I work from home, so I was able to see the progress each day. The project went very smoothly. The example I gave above has to do with the nature of the Lucente mosaic itself and how the contractor handled it. It was an easy fix.
