I appreciate the guide. But I think blaming the homeowner is somewhat strong. People who aren't in the business often don't have enough experience to understand the risks involved and they trust people who tell them they know what they are doing. I am in the business (as a real estate agent who sees great and awful reno work every day) and it's still a major challenge to get top quality work for my own home and for my clients. For example, I specifically hired a CTEF certified tile installer, and then he sent out a sub to do the work. So one more tip, ask who is going to do the work. And ask to see recent jobs - that's been the best tip for me, and a way I've eliminated many tradespeople from consideration.
