I am not sure exactly why the owners put the sign upside down. After meeting them, I would guess that it was not meant to offend because I did not get that impression from them. I would guess that it was for visual aesthetic .

Get a sense of humor. It's an American Oil sign, not a flag. It kind of spoofs the converted garage vibe to this bedroom and lets visitors know that they are not endorsing the product and that they know it isn't a work of art. I don't think it shows disrespect to our country; it's not the American flag.

Is it perhaps because they're trying to achieve an "upside down" appearance? I'm sure they didn't mean any disrespect. It is a little shocking but if you think about it, when you're laying down to sleep at night and you roll your eyes towards the back of your head the words would appear "right side up" so I imagine that is maybe one of the reasons??? Interesting concept...I wish the owner would enlighten us with the reasoning behind it.

Offended because a sign with the word american is upsidedown???????? If you are american you should be offended by people going to the store wearing Pyjamas with american flags, not what someone has in their own private space.

The upside-down sign is an appropriately juvenile final touch to a room that looks more suited for storing a lawn tractor than as a bedroom.

My guess is that there is something distinctly irreverent in the idea of 'American'. Probably more a sign of their appreciation than anything else.

It's an old gas station sign. Why is it offensive to hang that upside down? Because it has the word "American" on it? Really? I'm pretty sure part of what we like about America is the right to free expression. This includes hanging whatever you want in your own bedroom.

I agree. The owner of the sign has a total right to demonstrate what a fool he is. If he lived in Cuba or Iran, he would be arrested.

I LOVE signs particularly coke signs ( I have many ) but not upside down. Flip it!!

Maybe they are making a statement that America is upside down right now?? They may be right. Or maybe they are not American, liked the sign but didn't want to indicate they are American? Maybe they cannot get a green card, pay taxes, and cannot get a green card and so are making a statement? Or maybe not everyone wants to be American. Only certain Americans would be offended by is. Canadians make fun of themselves all the time, so do other countries but in reality they have a lot of pride in their country. Does everything have to be so serious? There could be a number of reasons, but who cares. It looks great. Not sure why people are trashing their home.

Betsy Ross had nothing to do with this image – but a marketing department probably did. This sign, repeat sign, is a corporate-designed logo of a commercial profit-seeking entity, it’s not a flag and it certainly does not have a soul.

To me those little metal American flag pins that every politician sports are offensive...if they're running for office in America, are they trying to convince us that they're citizens? Or that they love their country -- as opposed to anyone who isn't wearing that pin? Using the flag like that seems rather self-serving and disrespectful.

It's difficult for anyone who isn't American to understand how personal the American flag is to most Americans (and that includes me), regardless of their political stripe. I haven't done a world study on this, but extrapolating from my experience in the other countries I've lived in, it isn't always the norm to feel an emotional connection to the image of your flag, to have strong laws protecting it and even explicitly defining its use. I grew up saluting the flag and saying the pledge of allegiance at the start of every school day. My father was an Army officer for most of his life and is buried in Arlington. Served in two wars (a prisoner in one) and so on and so on. I only share all this to say – but don't generalize, assume or project! He disliked pomposity in any context and felt there was a great danger – for individuals as well as for countries – when insult and aggression are so easily perceived. One thing he regarded as sacred was our right to speak freely. Looks like that’s what the people who own this sign are doing – or not. I don’t really care what they do with the damn sign – but it sure looks great where it is.

Why is it that some people get so bent and rage against something like a sign being hung upside down. It's people like the one that freaked out over the sign being hung upside down, that have caused our country to actually become so divided and we are then subjected to their hate filled rants and rages. They need to become more concerned about the global warming they keep on denying exists and come to grips that the planet is way older than the 9 thousand years they claim to believe is the actual facts.

Looks like an upside down sign to me. That said, trail6, you are the one on the rant. And your additional comments about global warming and 9K years...is what is "dividing this country". Nobody in this post mentioned anything about their political/social opinions except you!

I'm also not a fan of the upside down sign. Aside from any personal meaning it may stir, it dominates the eye at the expense of the rest of the room. If it were turned right side up, I think it would still be a big statement in the room, but not so glaring.

Hello less than observant ranters. What's the first thing you'd see in the morning if you were lying in this bed, looking at the ceiling? Common sense, such a rarity today.
