Why!? What is happening?

Last summer, this was my lawn using alfalfa and Milorganite. I
was stoked to have that lawn. Then, the below happened over the winter
and now into spring time. What had happened and what do I do about it?
Ride it out and keep on keeping on? Call a pro? Weed killer? I have
close ups of the different weeds - I can count at least five different
kinds...

    Did you fertilize late fall?

October I think. But I cannot specifically remember doing it.

    Where are you located?

    What was the winter like?

Did you put down a pre emergent this year?

    Birmingham, AL, area.

Normal winter. A little snow, maybe more than usual. Not too too cold. Kinda wet.

    No pre-emergent.

Also, I have zoysia. I applied some of the weed killer you apply with your hose about two months ago.

    Any thoughts?

    Nobody around here anymore?

Its been colder than normal , and since Zoysia likes warmth, you are not supposed to be looking great right now. The cool nights should be coming to end soon, so fertilize with a high nitrogen, high iron fertilizer. Your next application of Milorganite should be 6 weeks after your initial fertilization with the high nitrogen product. Also spray broadleaf weed killer at this time.

Thats why its important to use a premergent as weed spraying does a little short term damage. Most of the time even on bermuda , the toughest grass out there it will still yellow it up a little and make the lawn not look good for 2-3 weeks.Ive also learnt that spray weed killer will delay the greening up process too, even on bermuda..They call this the transition time

Okay. I will use a pre-emergent this year.

So, what do I do now about these weeds? Ride it out?

Ride it out? No. Look back at Tom's last sentence.

I totally misread what he said! My bad. By ride it out I meant letting the grass grow and choking the weeds out on its own; but, broadleaf spray it is. Is there an "organic compliant" one or is there a good one to use?

DCHall, it was you that got me started on the organic route. It worked really well last year. I am ready to try new things this summer, mainly testing the soil and applying what is lacking or finding the organic way of doing so. I

The sooner you can get those weeds dead the better off you'll be. First, you need to identify the weeds so you will know what herbicide to use. Make sure the herbicide is Zoysia friendly as some will damage it. Right now those weeds are probably already dumping next years seed so getting the jump on them is very important.

Thanks. I have some closer up pics of the weeds if you guys don't mind?

Post them up. We should be able to help identify.

I cn't get the pics to post. I sprayed some broadleaf and nutsedge stuff on it over the weekend. We'll see if that works.

If I remember right, DCHall's original advice (when I first started doing the organic route) was to fertilize on the Federal holidays, starting with Memorial Day. Should I wait that long or do it now?
