Fairy Princess Garden

My 4 year old wants a little magical fairy princess place. I have this space off our downstairs patio. Was thinking of putting in some sort of ground cover so that she could play under the tree canopy. Maybe put in some sort of weather resistant tiny chairs and hang something pretty and twinkling.

Open to inexpensive suggestions!

Sounds really cute, how about some solar lights in the trees?

    Perhaps repurpose an old birdbath

Maybe a winding white road path with bark fill?

Some bird houses hung in the trees painted to look like fairy houses?

would you all spray something for spiders and ticks? I don't want anything that would then prevent her from playing there :)

Oh where I live there are no ticks and spiders are not a problem- perhaps someone local could advise you on that one :)

guess you could put artificial turf, you sure you need to worry about creepy crawlies? there are many fairy home things on line, lots of fun.

thanks! I wasn't clear...i don't want to spray any chemicals that would prevent her from playing there. Most little critters aren't too concerning around here

Oh that sounds good Jennifer- perhaps you could even make a fairy circle together :)

The painted lanterns look like a fun project :)

i would let natural growth be there, what you would call weeds and keep them trimmed fairly short, they can be very soft and fill in easily under trees. clover can be bought.

    Hi Jennifer,

I have the following ideas for you.

    1. Hang beautiful flower plants to the tress
      2. Paint the trees with lovely organic colors
      3. Grow grass on the ground or install artificial turf
      4. Add solar lights (as you already mentioned)
      5. Plant a small fairy garden in a big pot
      6. Build a small tree house in the corner

I found some designs on the Internet. Hope these will help.

If you want immediate surface, why not artificial turf?

You could do a little curvy path way of steppers 1’x1’ in part of the area and little areas of different colored rocks ... plus I vote for the synthetic turf like other posters.

    Hey Jennifer,

Are you done with this garden? Please share some pictures. I am so excited to see this beautiful project.

    Thanks!

Ridley Donovan - it's been slow moving. I've decided to ask my grandparents for their bird bath, as I have memories of playing with it as a child, which I thought would make it special. They're 300 miles away, so I need to get there and pack light so I have room for it. :) I have planted a box of flower seed throughout, which has begun to sprout. I have also found some solar lights to hang.

Went out to water this area and noticed that there are grass clippings everywhere from it blowing down when the yard is being done. Is there anything I can do to stop this? I have until Thursday when the lawn guys come again. Was thinking some sort of mesh barrier a long the brick?

Each tree could have its own little fairy garden. I like the little door on the tree. After the area around the tree is complete you can mulch the rest and add some little table and chairs.

Here they planted azaleas with a path under a grove of trees.

What a delightful idea! That space is already so clear and open a lot of things are possible.

Though a questions first.. What are the trees? Do they shed a lot of have sticky sap? And why is that area so clear and open- is it because nothing grows there or because it just got an excellent clean up job?

I'll offer a couple suggestions past astro/outdoor turf. If the area is right for it, consider making a carpet of moss. Or perhaps utilize a fine grade playground mulch- using an edger to help keep the mulch inside the garden. Stepping stones or other pavers to set up paths or spaces for setting up chairs. Solar lights in the trees and around the paths and into littler spaces.

Think of what would make that space a fairy enchanting for adult size if those trees were wander-underable by a person say.. 5'6" to 6' tall.. and then miniaturize it for your princess only up to growing height of say 3 foot tall or so? So include the walkways, lights, and sights, just on your little girls scale.

Even as she gets older.. On the left of the photo is a nice wide enough to have a walkway, the center a bit more of a build in with fairy gardens perhaps front with the birdbath, and the right another walkway opening. Dress up that back wall nice so even when she isn't a little fairy princess anymore she can still enjoy the refuge, perhaps replacing small chairs with a bench or something later on.
