Your house looks like a perfectly fine house for someone who's not into decorating. But yes, if your question is only about a back splash, yes you need a back splash. And yes, you need to repaint the yellow and rust to a neutral lighter color.

Try removing a few of the red chairs in the living room. I think the paint color may be fine and there is just too much red in a tone that doesn't flatter the yellow.
