The stairs will be moved over but they still won't be quite centered on the door (the door is actually a screen door to a covered porch and we have sliding doors on the other side of the porch that are barely visible) the deck is wide enough for seating and walking around and while I would like to make it wider, i cannot as it will take away from much needed driveway space. We also have a septic field which also limits our ability to enlarge the space.

I’d paint the balusters a dark color or just get black or bronze metal balusters. But keep the top and bottom railing the light color.

how much further will they have to come out to make code? might you do a landing and a turn part way?

I think we will have to do a landing and then a turn in order to make the stairs compliant. they are so steep right now!

I do like the thought of a metal (black) balusters too. We have a rod iron fence in the front of the house which would tie the front and back of the house together. what do you think about hardwood and metal? too modern/not keeping with the victorian style or would it help blend the deck into the back of the house. the deck is not original and was probably added ~ 25 years ago.

I would start with a dark green paint sample and trying to paint what you already have. At least a small section just to see how it looks. Also, the lattice below is a bit chaotic looking. Any chance of replacing the diamond lattice with square lattice?
