Enormous Master Bedroom Heeeelp!

Hi, we bought this house of ours last year and loved the massive Master bedroom it came with. The problem now is, how do I place furniture ? This is basically the Master bedroom with a lounge or second family room. Need help deciding whether to keep the bed in the space with the fireplace and have seating on the other side or vice-versa. Note that the space with the fireplace is farther away from the Master bath and walk in closets. I have added a picture with the mattress placed in the fireplace area as well to give context. I haven't bought anything yet as I want to decide what to buy based on where it would be places. Help!

Put the bed on the fireplace side. Super romantic, and also you won't be opening the door right into the bed. The upper area will act as a foyer/sitting area to the more intimate lower area.

Oh, and your bed will be further from the bathroom. To me that's a plus.

I love having a fire going near my bed! It's really cozy on a cold night.

I would also keep the bed where it is in the first picture. If someone had to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, those steps could be a hazard if you moved it. Beautiful room.

Bed where it is in first picture. You own private den in front of the fireplace. TV where the desk is now. If you have to have a desk in there, put it on the wall behind the couch facing the fireplace/TV. Please don't put the TV over the fireplace. What a fantastic room.

IF it were me, I'd put the bed on the fireplace side and a really lush dressing room/sitting room by the bathroom and closet.

Thanks all for your comments so far, FYI we will be putting in a gas insert and modifying the surround on the fireplace, so it would be nicer.

Is the door with the step the entrance into the space from the rest of the house?

Can you do a 2d sketch showing the whole space and where the entry is?

At first blush, I’d want to have the area near the fireplace a sitting area and the sleeping space further from public space. If you pu the bed where the fireplace is it looks like the headboard will be on the wall across from fireplace which means door is behind to the side of head of bed. I never like sleeping with the door out of view for some reason.

Fascinating that there are people who want a fireplace next to their beds -- I would never ever sleep with the firelight. I bow to the diversity of human experience.

Thanks all. The main entrance to the space is a double door entry right across from the bed/mattress placement in the first picture. It is visible in the 4th picture. The Washroom /walk in closets are visible in the last picture, right near the dresser. The door near the steps is a second entrance which walks right into the room with the fireplace.

Since you have a second entrance, I would invest in closing off the double door entry and use the upper level as your bedroom. Add a gorgeous bed and chandy. In the lower area, go for a luxurious sitting room. If you want TV here, put it left of the FP and move the desk behind a sofa facing the FP. A pair of swivel armchairs and coffee table can cozy it up. Use matching rugs in both areas. Here are some inspirations for furnishing both spaces.

Put the bed in front of the fireplace for sure, where you have a bigger area and more distant from the bathroom. Use the other area for your makeup area and some accent chairs

"Since you have a second entrance, I would invest in closing off the double door entry and use the upper level as your bedroom."

That's interesting, I had the exact opposite thought. I would close off the single door with its step that looks destined to end in a broken leg!

I must have missed the part about the step, but I'd prefer to enter the lower area.

Just curious if anyone but me is concerned with having to navigate steps in the middle of the night to use the bathroom if the bed is on the lower level? Maybe it’s just an old fogie thing.

Interesting what a diversity of opinion--I would definitely keep the bed in the current area and use the fireplace area as a seating area.

Hi Celerygirl, I am not able to see the picture you just sent. Can you try posting it again please?

Thanks all for your comments and suggestions, I am leaning towards keeping the bedroom where it is in the first picture, however, not totoally decided till now.

This klutz would definitely keep the bed at the same level as the bathroom. It just takes one sleepy midnight mis-step...

remember, that nothing is set in stone and you can always move things around. That's the glory of not having a whole lot of furniture right now. I have the feeling that you would have already tried putting the bed near the fireplace if you had wanted it to be that way. if you're not sure, try it for a few weeks. The stairs, the distance, the doors, all of that needs to be lived in and felt through. personally I would put that type of function first and design second. then bring in a few cozy chairs or loveseat and see how that feels near the fireplace. If you can, having the desk in a separate room might enhance the relaxation of your master suite. again, you can move it and see how it feels. I am currently going through the same thing with my master. I hired an interior designer and then quit because I realize that no one can really know how it feels except me. so I am actually taking my own advice currently, moving around the necessary furniture and seeing how it feels. we are going to do that next with art. figure out the function of your necessary pieces and the rest is just filler.

Hi all, I know it has been a long time since I started this discussion. Here are the photos of what I ended up doing with this large space. We kept the bed on the upper level and bought a sectional leather sofa for the lower level, with the fireplace. There is a TV on the right hand side of the fireplace, on a stand.

Let me know what you think

You definitely made the right choice!

    Looks great!

Great choices. Did you consider moving the couch away from the wall? It could be left empty. Or it would give you room behind it for a thin couch table where you can hide charger cords or put drinks, decor, or keep it plain and sleek..

You also have space for a tall/straight or arching statement lamp in the corner where your couch side table is...or install a big pendant lamp hanging from the ceiling (with or without a visible cord).

Either way, I would replace the couch side table wh a "C - table" to make space for the lamp.

Hi Mrspepper, I like the idea of moving the couch away from the wall, I will do that. Actually, if tou look closely, there is a tall paper lamp in that corner. The cielings are high so it doesnt look tall. The arching lamp ides is also great I think though.
