Exterior Curb Appeal and Window Design
I am going back and forth on what to do with our front windows. We can replace the windows on the main floor with taller double hungs and therefore remove the transoms. The garage windows will measure 32x84. For the grouping on each side of the front door, we would probably go back with 2 wider/taller double hungs (35x84) instead of 3 very narrow ones (23x84). For the front door, we can remove the transom and replace with an 8ft tall 2 panel fiberglass door and sidelites. We are opting for no grids throughout beacuse we love the way clear glass looks from the inside. I am excited about the project and I think it will look amazing, but am nervous we could be compromising curb appeal. Do transoms add curb appeal, or will taller windows on the main level look better? Thoughts, opinions? I really appreciate it!

- 8 years agoI used a website to create a mock-up of what the house will kind of look like. Any opinions? Do you like the look of the taller 8ft door? Or should I go back with a 6'8" door and transoms throughout the main level? Taking out the transoms means all of the windows on the main level now need to be tempered, so it's really about the same cost either way. So my decision is coming down to what will look better. THANK YOU! I need advice!

So, I have a lot of window trim that is rotted and literally crumbling. The windows themselves also look pretty bad (the left two won't close all of the way even though i've tried to relock them). The front of the house just bakes from the sun and our AC bill in the summer is ridiculous despite the fact that we have new HVAC systems and proper attic insulation. So, if i'm going to have to replace a lot of the trim anyway, it seems to make sense to do it all at the same time. Capping the new windows and replacing rotten trim is included in the price.
I've run the numbers and it's about the same cost to keep the current number of windows or change to taller/fewer number of windows. I can't figure out which will look better. I would think the tall front doors and windows would look awesome, but I'm afraid I won't know for sure until it's done.

The windows are in proportion to the house. Just replace them. Seriously consider using landscaping to add color to your house. Deeper beds in the front as awm03 shows above is the way to go instead of the expense of painting the house (Unless it needs it.)

The PVC capping can add a lot to a house but I don't think your window style is creating a lack of curb appeal. I think if you keep the window width and go taller ,without the transom ,they will look too skinny.
I think your home could benefit from an updated entry like these pictures plus more landscaping. Otherwise is looks quite nice.
