What Lighting for Vaulted Ceiling?

First time poster, long time reader!!! We just bought a house and are finalizing the remodel design, and we're struggling with how to light the living room. The pictures linked below are with the staging furniture, but you can see how dark the area is with no overhead lights and no window. Originally, I thought track lighting would be simplest, but am worried it may be too bulky or not light the room evenly. But would a chandelier provide enough light? There is not enough room in the ceiling for recessed can lighting.

Please note, we are tearing out most of the wall above the couch as well as the shelving unit shown in the photos to create a kitchen "peninsula" opening into the living room. There will be pendant lighting above the counter there.

Where are the wall or floor outlets located in the room? Are you re-configuring the built in shelves? It doesn't look dark in the photos, but I don't know what additional lighting the photographer may have used. Overhead lighting is not really necessary if you know how to judiciously utilize task and accent lighting. The built-in could be lighted and glass shelves would let it shine through. You could install a spot to highlight the chimney breast and fireplace. Art on the walls can be highlighted with art lights, and of course floor and table lamps will carry the rest of the lighting load. Generally, overhead lighting is helpful to get in and out of a room to turn on the other lighting, but it isn't very flattering to people or furniture. For a touch of style, focus on the dining room chandelier.

I agree with Deco, there are many designs for picture lights. Don’t forget can uplights too; they can throw a lovely glow on your beautiful ceiling and look very nice at night. Not nearly as harsh as overhead light. Wall sconces can also be used. Up lights behind large plants or trees will throw interesting light and shadows.

No one solution will be right for any room.

I would select the West Elm chandelier for the room, add some track lights to highlight some of the features in the room and some library lights to highlight the bookcases. But that depend on whether you have electrical in the ceiling and can hide it with the beams. You'll still require reading lamps.

Here track lighting (small units) is attached to the beams.

Thank you all so much for the suggestions!!!! I love them all!!! So excited I finally posted on Houzz. This is a huge help. The bookcase is actually coming out as well as the partial wall behind it to create an open plan and a kitchen "peninsula". Attached herein is the rendering of the remodel. There is already wiring hidden alongside the beams in the ceiling and it would be easy to add more if need be, so I'm definitely going to be using all of these ideas! Any suggestions for pendant lighting above the peninsula?

Your rooms are fabulous! I like Beverly's suggestions a lot. Additionally, some table lamps at the ends of the sofa or chairs would add needed lighting.
