Need help with my kitchen backsplash!

I'm moving into a new apartment and the kitchen has this awful mosaic backsplash. What type of backsplash can i choose that will make it look more urban and modern without having to re-do the rest of the kitchen? Would love subway tile but not sure if it would go. Thanks!
