Floor length light colored curtains will be the quickest way to brighten the space. Also, if its your fireplace you are looking to update, consider replacing the mantle with a more simple design, and white washing the stone (will need to white wash the rest of the stone in the room as well).

I would need more pictures . The furniture seems to be placed in odd places but I can’t tell from the pics. The sofa seems to be very far away from the T.V . I for sure would remove the valaces from the windows. The mantel on the fireplace is all wrong and too much stuff on it too. The funny little mats everywhere make no sense.The wall color does not work with the stone and painting the stone would not be a good idea IMO.

I agree with Patrica's comments. Please take down the dark valences. There is currently no patterns, florals, paisleys, plaids, in your room. Adding color and pattern in the drapes would be good additions. There are too many little things in a very big room; I think some things, esp on mantle could be removed. All your furniture is placed along the walls. Consider two sitting arrangements: one facing fireplace, one centered on TV. Once you have your sitting arrangements, then add two large rugs to "ground" the sitting areas.

To make two seating arrangements, put the tv in front of one of the windows next to the fireplace. Move the sofa or chairs you usually use to watch tv across from them. Then move the other furniture to center on the fireplace. The dog mats are very useful and keep the dogs happier. I would move the mats around to where they work best in the new arrangements.

Do you want to change your display of statues and steins? Displaying different groups at different seasons allows each group to stand out.

For curtains, after you take off the green valences, you'll have the beige curtains still there. Consider adding blinds behind the curtains, especially behind the tv to reduce glare if you watch tv in daylight.

I'd keep the stone as is (no wash or paint), but the warm tone of the wall paint doesn't work with the cool stone color. I'd work on finding a cool neutral that would work well with both the stone and wood tones. And float the furniture away from the walls. Ditto to those comments above regarding the valances. The brass chandeliers are too formal for the style of the room, so I'd swap them for something more rustic in a darker metal.

I wonder if the best place for the TV is against one of the little walls opposite the fireplace - so you don't have sunlight coming in behind it. Then you could arrange the furniture in one grouping facing the TV and one smaller one focused on the fireplace.

The stone is beautiful! Not sure how much money you want to spend, but I think that fireplace would look better with a simple stained wood mantle instead of the white with the corbels and miniature railing.

I agree that changing from dark valances to full length light (solid white or ivory) curtains would help.

Would you consider having two seating groups with area rugs? I think that would help the space feel more cohesive.

Apologies if this is too big of a suggestion or not something you'd like, but would you consider removing the railing from the stone pony walls? They don't seem to serve a purpose and seem to be adding visual clutter.
