light finish (no red) for red oak floors

Does anyone have experience finishing red oak floors that will produce a light finish but without the typical red/orange shade of natural on red oak. We want a light finish and would consider a silver/grey stain if needed. All ideas are appreciated.

I had our red oak floors finished with Bona Nordic Seal. Our flooring guy used two coats of the Nordic Seal (3 turned the floors blue); two coats of a Bona satin sealer (I wanted matte all the way around, but I am pleased with the result) and a final coat with Bona Extra Matte sealer. I am super pleased with the result.

I think it’s great to see a professional looking for advice; don’t think anyone knows everything... that is the old school mentality!

What was the reason for using 2 coats of satin instead of 3 coats of Matt? Does your floor still look mat? I also had a question for you on another Bona Nordic discussion. I would really appreciate your feedback. Thank you.

@temporary77 -thank you! We are really happy with the outcome.

The refinishers were the ones who recommended using two coats of satin and a final coat of matte. Apparently the matte finish offers less protection from stains. In hindsight, I might have accepted stains as part of the deal—I really like the completely matte look.

@Julie, Do you happen to live near Seattle area? If you do, I was wondering if you could let me know which company finished your hardwood flooring. I live in Mill Creek, Wa. And haven’t found a contractor who is willing to use Bona Nordic sealer. Thank you.

Julie, beautiful floors! Could you offer advice and clarify? You used no stain? And which picture is truer to the color you achieved? The lighter or the medium tone (larger view of flooring). TIA

The Nordicseal has pigments in it. Its a little different than a regular stain color. The finish looks good over both red and white oak in my opinion.
